Nice weather job !

I thought the Elco had 3 tiny old paddle style rudders. Higgins had the biggie deep spade types.

Nice detail on the stern deck !

Mine are quite a bit over scale, and the boat still won't turn worth a hoot.
See scale drawing attached, builder's drawing from the National Archives.

And photo of the Higgin's deep rudders. Note three same-handed props... same was done on Elco, simpler transmissions that way.

But real PTs COULD turn... check the 80 footer, above, in this ad. And the 80's were said to handle worse than the 77's!

My 8' Higgins has over sized twin rudders, 20 % and twin screws.

At full speed, hard over is a instant bank into the turn and in 20 + feet, it is comming back at me. Out of the hole and on plane in 2 seconds.

What you and I have as turn differences agrees perfectly with WW II PTB captains who ran both types.

Thumbs up to us both.

Pat. I think your turn problem is simple to cure and make yours actually out turn mine.

The bottom of the rudders in the picture are triangles. The have very little blade area in the props high flow area .
I can send you some scans by email of my rudders. I will take one off and you will see that they reach below the bottom of the 4.5" 5 blade props. They just clear the bullet tail piece.

I have the largest sailboat servo as the rudder servo to prevent sucking the rudder into a reversing prop. Overbalance of the rudder is 25 %.

Cyclops- if you have the pix as files, you can post 'em!
Just click on "Go Advanced", below;
scroll down to "Manage Files", click on "Manage Attachments".
Trick- after browsing and finding the files, you MUST hit "Upload", then wait a bit. It'll let you know when it's done;
Then "Close This Window";
Then "Submit reply".

Not hard, just not obvious...

Yup, I'm sure that's it. The Midwest PTs have huge round rudders, set in the prop's path. Mine would just have to be so big to get down there, yuk. They're already like 200% big!

The depth to the bottom of the prop is all important. As the rudder goes deeper, so does the boats leaning into the direction of the turn.

I can email the shape off of my plans to you to scale down or up as needed.

You will really enjoy the boat when she leans in on plane.
