"electric" hobby shops in the UK

Hi all

This is a question for all the good people in the UK...I'm looking for a list of hobby shops in the UK that cater for electric flight. All of the hobby shops I have been to have been only for trains and cars.

I'm currently in Edinburgh and the largest hobby shop I have found is "Wonderland". Big enough but doesn't cater for my needs, as you'll understand. I need to get a gearbox for my Himark 4011 motor (like the Promax 4011, just a different name in Australia) whilst I'm over here. Any suggestions (must be an inline gearing)?

And also does anybody know where I can get a copy of Electric and Silent Flight International???? None of the newsagencies over here (that I've been to) stock it and I have to get a copy soon before I go mad.

Cheers
Glen

If you try asking for Quiet and Electric Flight magazine you may have more luck. Most branches of W.H.Smith stock it.

There are many shops that have electric flight gear e.g. West London Models is near Heathrow airport and is one of the best shops. Slough Radio Control is reasonable (just along the M4 west of London). I can't do you a complete list for the UK, there are dozens if not hundreds. Where are you intending to visit ?

Glen,

I work at Slough Radio Control that Steve mentioned. I'm pretty sure we don't have any gearboxes that directly fit the promax motors. West London didn't have any (at least not 3:1+ ratios) when I asked them about 6 months ago. However they are the best specialist electric shop, so it would be worth giving them a call.

The trouble with the Promax 400 is that it has a 400-size mounting pattern, but a 3.2mm shaft (like most 480s). The gearbox I eventually bought for mine is the Cosmotech planetary 4.5:1. But I needed a shaft adapter for it, which I could only find in Germany (at Hoellein).

You will find most UK shops haven't heard of either Himark or Promax. The motor is called the "11T Irvine cobalt 400" in the UK.

Moorcraft gearboxes

Do a search for a member called Eddie Thorpe. He makes gear boxes to fit that motor in a number of ratios

Mark.

Excellent service and really robust gearboxes and mounts, not expensive either
