Am I late for the maidens of the C-130s ?

Just finished up hollowing out the foam engine housings for the 12 mm gearboxes.
Does anybody have slack wires in the cowel area for engine pull out & repair?
Or did you do something else.
About ready to glue them in with some RTV lightly. So I do not tear out wing chunks during repairs.

I didn't have any slack wire in mine and had to pull everything apart when I upgraded to larger motors. Slack wire would be a good idea.

A friend of mine just finished a quad-EDF version and flew it at our field. Now I'm motivated to get mine out of mothballs and finish it since I just picked up a NIP brushed ESC for a song.

I am at 16 to 17 oz on a scale. Just RC parts & the foam plane parts & with a 3C 2.2 amp hour Nano tech battery.
As I recall those 12 mm GWS motors were not thrust monsters.
I should be getting about 4 oz from each motor or 16 oz of thrust total. The plane looks " draggy " ? Is it. ?

The geared motors using GWS 4" x 4" props do a static 11,800 rpm. So the takeoff speed is about 40 mph

Does that set up provide enough power for add ons like the operating cargo door.
How does your plane do if only flown on R E M ?

Rich,

Did you say a 3-cell 2200 pack? If so, you're going to burn those motors out in one big hurry!

I flew mine with a ThunderPower 2S 1320, and it flew just fine. Not fast, but able to stay airborne without issue.

I would say go with a 2S 1300 or so pack. A 2200 will be way too heavy.

The motor is not a GWS brush type. It is a Hyperion 12 mm in a BP Hobbies Aluminum cased gearbox of 4.14 : 1 ratio. It can handle 8.5 amps with enough cooling. I keep it at 6 amps or less in closedup scale looking cowls like ours. The motor will be 1/2 way buried in the foam housing with some airflow out the back.

They are spinning the GWS EP 4 X 4 prop at 11,800 rpm & at 2.4 amps on a 10 volt pack.
The motor is cold during 3 minutes @ WOT.

Ah, OK. Good. Looking at the pic I couldn't tell if they were stock or upgraded.

Hi Pat,

Please tell me more - any pictures or video? Your friend's is the first flying quad EDF I've heard of. I shipped one to the UK several years ago but its been sitting in my build pile ever since. Could be I'm motivated to reach for it? Is your friend flying with the stock brushed fans (which is what I had planned)?

Seems to me that adding 4 brushless units together with four esc is going to add about $100 which I'd prefer to avoid. I don't need it to do anything more heroic than flying to scale.

Roger

My cost is $ 29 for each motor & $ 8.50 per gearbox. X 4 is $142 .

Bigger is cheaper.

Hi Roger!

Just pics for now, but it did fly pretty well on the stock power system. No overly fast, just a tad slower then the quad prop version.
