why aren't 9 cell packs so popular ?

most e-flyers use 7,8 or 10 cells packs. what happened to the 9 cell packs ? is it a configuration problem ?

Hi Oded
My first foray into 10 cell - thanks to encouragement from Ken Myers - was held up by not having a 10 cell capable charger. What I had would charge 8 with more enthusiasm than my AF05G would run on that number, but it would charge 9 cells in an hour - and those were 1200s.

So, I flew with an AF05G, 2/38:1, a 10 x 8W Zinger wood prop on 9 cells for several months. It didn't too badly, but when I went to the AF035G, 2.8:1, same prop and a repaired, stripped version of the same model on ten 1700 cells, it was all far more fun. Needless to say, I'd bought a more capable charger (Astro 112D) and done my good deed for the day by giving my old charger to an electric newbie

If you make up your own packs or pay someone good to do it, getting the + & - terminals at the same end of the pack so you don't carry 'dead weight' wire is mostly a matter of ingenuity.

I have enough ten packs now that it's easier to design and make my models around them, than mess with different cell counts.

Hi Oded. I made some 9x1000 Nimh packs for my Simple 400 so it would fly comparable to 8x600ae and twice as long. I just added one cell sideways at the end of an 8 cell pack. Although they get very warm, they work great and only 19 gr. wt. penalty.

I made a 9x800ar pack (3 sticks of 3) and it flew well and balanced well in the brushless P-Jet.

Probably the main reason is that in an end-to-end configuration, the 9-cell pack just doesn't work.

Other reasons could be that the odd number 9 brings back bad memories of the "7-cell trap".

When using the newer Sanyo CP cells, an 8-cell CP2400 pack is the same size as a 10-cell CP1700 pack. This has given me many different configurations to fly with on my 16-20 cell planes.

9-cell packs

I've been using 9-cell 500AR packs for my geared S400 Comet 54"Aeronca Chief. I added a cell to my 8cell packs for added ROG and climb power.

I agree with Greg. 7 cells is the maximum you can load without voltage booster from a 12V battery, so they make perfect sense when you want a cheap entry into E-Flight. Inline packs look so much smarter, fit nicely into tubes and are much less fuzz to make. Jürgen
