I'm to the point on my project that I need to start considering practiclaities:

Putting a free EDF nacelle (Vasa 55G) on top of a wing (as opposed to buried in a fuselage. What is done with the wires to the motor?

Do you trail them out the back of the nacelle?

drill a small hole in the nacelle ducting and get them out of the stream as early as possible?

In a light model, would it be reasonable to use something like Goop/silicone to glue the nacelle directly to the wing surface as there isn't much torque?

Fitting a ply plate to use the supplied screws seems to be more trouble than it's worth, because the wing would need to be strengthened to accept the screws!

I have mounted EDF's using velcro strips. This worked just fine as long as I applied power in a smooth, steady manner.

The fans were mounted under the wing so there was a definite risk of knocking them off during landing;hence the soft mounts.

They worked very well, too well in fact. Every clump of grass pulled one or the other off. So I moved the fans to the top of the wing, still held on with velcro. No more porblems.

Still not sure what to do with the wires to come out of the nacelles.

Those look very much like they will get knocked off, especially if the grass you land on is 'clumpy'.

So you have a couple of choices.

a) use landing gear

b) use break-away fan mounts and save the wing

c) hard mount the fans and risk wing damage

The plane below lost one or both fans on just about every landing. If I can find it I'll post the solution to this particular problem.

You may have missed something in the pictures that affects the outcome.

The EDF units are resting on another pair of wings which will be supporting them from below. They will be therefore sandwiched between two sets of wings.

What isn't shown is the reverse (anhedral) dihedral of the lower wings. To avoid a total wingtip landings I will put in a central skeg at the same depth as the wings.

Not quite sure if it will fly or not!

I did consider landing gear. Maybe a lightweight retract in the nose and wheels in the wing tips?

I was so engrossed by the bagel sitting on top of the wing I completely missed the lower wing

I have found cream cheese and stale bagels to be terrific for strengthening butt joints...

It is indeed a 'version' of the X-wing fighter. Should be done in a week or so, family permitting.

I hope to bring it to Mid-Ams.

Ahhh, I have had an X wing on the board for some time now, I even have the templates cut out,,, have not got any further with it, This one is a single EDF with the fan inboard, I enlarged the bottom fins on the lower motivator pods and added one up front on the forward fuse as a bungeed hook / landing skid to form tripod landing skids. If this one works I wanted to do a quad vasa and perhaps if that had good power, an Ospray type rotating wing VTOL,,,,,, Look out Doc!!!

The single is supposed to be a proof of concept platform, I was hoping to get it built intime for the EDF contest, but I choose to do an F-4 that I just could not get squared away either,,,, Here is the full drawling.

I had considered a qhad power as well, but wanted to keep it small, so am placing a pair of Vasa's between the wing.

Seeing your drawing has reminded me of the pair of KP-44's which could be easily doubled...

or maybe a very lightweight version with 4x GWS 50s!
