SlowStick Buildup...Mild to Wild! -- Lots of updated videos and pics!
I purchased two Slow Stick gliders from towerhobbies for $21 each. I already have all the radio gear, motors, etc.
Anyone here install a Hobby-lobby 400XT brushless outrunner motor on one of these? (with the 2 cell lipo mentioned below and a 10x4.7 prop I was getting 18oz of thrust at 8.1amps when installed in a small Piper cub) Right now I am still building the plane...stronger than stock as it will have to holdup under the extra thrust... For the wing I epoxyed the two halfs together and replace the fiberglass wing supports with the same size carbon fiber which saved 6grams off the weight and are over twice as strong..I temp. taped them in place then epoxyed them in...after doing some research on different tape I found that a high grade of clear 3M packing take...heavier fiber enforced packing tape is not needed with CF rods. As far as the rudder and elavator usual buildup with some epoxy applied after assembly and in between the plastic support strips...these may need some thin carbon fiber inserts but I'm going to try it out first. Any suggestions on where the wing should set on this or just move it around to suite the CG? Right now I am buiding my boys SS which will run a 2 cell 1000mah 15C lipo pack 2.2oz and a Castle Creations Thunderbird 9 ESC with a GWS 6 channel RX, prop will be a 10x4.7 SF. On mine I will be using the same 400XT motor but with a Castle Creations Thurderbird 18 with a 3 cellmah lipo pack...not sure which size mah it should be for best power and long flight? It will have the same RX and maybe a 11x4.7 prop? I am still waiting for the outrunner motor adapter from Horizon Hobbies for the two planes so I will have to wait on setting it up all the way. Brushless Motor Mount Adapter for Slow Stick Any suggestions or pics would be great! Thanks, Last edited by kctrading; Oct 11, 2009 at 04:02 PM. |

Get them released Mr. Lin, unfortunatly your promised product delivery time frames are not generally met.
The 400xt makes a great slow stick upgrade. 9x5 GWS Hd prop and this $20 motor is great! Mike |

What do you guys think?
My son's plane ready to fly without battery pack: 11.4oz. Plane will weigh 13.5oz with a 1000mah 2 cell lipo 15C rated I have on hand. Mine will weigh 17.8oz with a 2000mah 3 cell lipo 15C rated (30Cont./50Max amps) Ken |

Do I bias the motor mount up or down? I would think up for more prop clearance.Ken |

Up yes. Not only for clearance, but being off center it will add a small amount of desirable downthrust. Below the fuse has the opposite affect, adding to the SS's tendency to climb under throttle.
Edit I think I read this wrong, I meant the motor should be above the stick. 3-5 degrees of right/down may be needed. For a lower thrust setup less is needed. Last edited by Ron H; Jan 30, 2006 at 11:29 PM. |

i bought a 400xt a few months ago, i'll never buy another motor from esskay. its the high end motor, yet the shaft cant be reversed or replaced, the one i have has a high pitched scream coming from it that makes it almost unbearable to be around and since the shafts arent reversable its impossible to firewall mount.

Well I got it pretty much done except for some custom decals, adjusting and triming the servo control wires.
Yeah I over built it a little with carbon fiber in the wings, tail and elavator with tape on all the 3M tape on all the edges and over the carbon fiber...after chewing up a piper cub I learned on this one...rear .5mm x 3mm carbon fiber strip only added 1.5grams to the rear of the tail...switching to carbon fiber rods on the wing saved 6grams total...I also added one strip of fiberglass striping take to the bottom of the wing from tip to tip which added another 2 grams...so still less than if built stock. Used a lite weight GWS 6 channel esc: 8 grams Two RC Smart 9 grams servos Castle Creations Thunderbird 9 ESC 8 grams TrueRC 7.4v 2 cell 1000mah 15C lipo 2.2 oz/63 grams Hobby-Lobby 400XT Outrunner Motor, prop saver & 9x6 APC SF 2.2oz/63 grams Total weight ready to fly 13.9oz/397 grams Any other suggestions are always welcome.... And don't forget GWS is about 2 years late to the brushless dance as a whole! Had you released these 2 years ago (When Himaxx entered the market) you would now own the market. You have great products and excellent prices, but your move to mainland China has certainly slowed the release of your great products. Hopefully the bugs are now worked out. Mike |

With a fully charged 1000mah 15C 2 cell lipo.
I think I can getaway with running the 10x4.7 apc sf prop! Once the plane gets moving it should go down further on the amps. 16.8oz of thrust per my digital postal scale. Ken Last edited by kctrading; Feb 05, 2008 at 12:39 PM. |
