GWS AT-6 Texan (Zero Conversion)

Well my wife got me a ride in an AT-6 Texan for Xmas, Iíve got to wait until July when History Flight will be up in the Long Island area. To learn more about the plane I decided to build one.

Lately Iíve been into larger war birds (just finished a SureFlite P40) but I wanted to build something quickly. Looked around for AT-6 kits and decided to buy a GWS Zero slope glider kit and do a conversion, itís been done before. No itís not technically accurate but itís fun and coming along pretty nicely.

I clipped the wings and shortened the ailerons a bit so they donít extend to the wingtips. Itís got a carbon fiber wing spar. I also did a bit of work to the rudder to make it look more ďold schoolĒ I added some Depron and got rid of the tail wheel well. The colors are hand painted latex craft store paint; the decals are from a GWS Corsair kit.

I stilled need to fabricate a port air scoop, do the wing incidence fix and load in all the flight gear. I want to paint the cowl red but the latex paint just scrapes off, need to find something that will adhere better.

The power plant will be a Himax 2025-5300 ďBĒ ratio spinning an APC 9075SF prop off a Thunder Power 2S 2100 ProLite pack. On the bench this setup provided 165 watts at about 22 amps, it should be a very spirited flyer.

With these colors and decals I donít see how anyone could mistake it for a Zero anymore. Iíve never owned a plane with this much color before, should be easy to orientate when flying. If Iím lucky Iíll maiden her this coming Saturday, Sunday Iím leaving for a week long business trip.

Looking pretty good. However, if you really want an unmistakeable T6, get rid of the Zero canopy. Its a pretty big detractor right now. You can probably buy one without too much trouble, or if your more adventurous, carve a plug and make pop bottle canopy. Otherwise, lookin nice!

Can you use one for an AT6 form Cox? They are only 99 cents right now compared to $2.50 Here is a link:

Looks like a nice find. I tried to dig up info on the original Cox C/L plane, but came up blank. From what I could tell it seems like the C/L planes had a rather small wingspan. Do you know what the wingspan was for the Cox AT-6 Texan C/L airplane? I'd like to know if canopy you're suggesting will be a close fit.

I think GWS making an AT-6 is a great idea. The Texan is a true classic, every American WW2 pilot flew one while training. While on vacation in St Croix a couple of months ago I met an old retired Air Force pilot who was flying F4 Phantoms, and he was telling me about his early training days in an AT-6. A lot of history, a lot of character, I think it would be a great addition to your warbird line.

try to fing another OEM canopy from GWS and cut the 2 in half mating the 2 front pieces together, that will get you close.

Please don't tease me with the promise of a GWS Texan. I'm already 47 years old, so probably can't expect to live long enough to see it produced.

Well for the lack of anything left to do, I'll call here done.

Motor: Himax 2025-5300, "B" ratio
Prop: APC 9075 E
ESC: CC25
Battery: ThunderPower 2S 2100 ProLite
Receiver: BlueBird 4 channel
Servos: BlueBird 371, 9 gram (1-ailerons, 1-elevator)

Tossed her on the scale and the ready to fly weight with a TP 2S 2100 is an amazing 14.95 ounces. Every other plane I've painted has been a brick, I was expecting something much heavier.

Painted the cowl with some Rustoleum "Plastic" red spray paint, it adhered quite well. Made up the port side air scoop out of a scrap of Depron. I swapped the prop to an APC 9075 E and the power dropped down to 140 watts with a corrosponding reduction in battery current. I think she'll do fine on the E series prop.

I'll look into other possible canopy options, but she's ready to fly. Just hoping the weather is agreeable this Saturday, I'm looking forward to the maiden.

The wings are the stock Zero wings. I clipped about an inch off the wingtips to get a square wingtip profile. All mold marks were sanded off, any holes and the like were filled with lightweight spackle.
