Mike,

It is true that they are similar in power. The MIG 280 is lower cost and therefor a better value.

The specs on the Hobby Lobby Speed 280 page are confusing for the two motors but when viewing the "gearboxes" chart, you can see little difference between the two motors when geared at a 4:1 ratio.

Keep in mind that the Speed 280BB and Speed 300 motors are also different animals. The Speed 280 BB is the same size as a Speed 280 but has twice the RPMs and power output and therefor twice the current requirements.

The Speed 300 is similar in power to the Speed 280BB but is a larger size motor.

Mega Mig 280, save your money

If you're looking to upgrade a Speed 280 with a Mega Mig 280 from Hobby Lobby, forget it. It's actually less powerful than the Graupner Speed 280 they sell. The following is from an email from Hobby Lobby.

I'VE CHECKED WITH L. A. OUR TECH AND HE TOLD ME THAT WE WERE TOLD BY THE MANUFACTURER THAT THE MIG 280 WAS A MORE POWERFULL MOTOR BUT IN REALITY IT IS NOT. THE TWO MOTORS TURNED OUT TO BE VERY SIMILAR. THE ONLY MAJOR DIFERENCE IS THAT THE MIG 280 MOTOR IS LESS EXPENSIVE. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A MORE POWERFULL MOTOR IN THE 280 SIZE, L. A. SUGESTED YOU TO GO TO THE NEW SIMPROP BB 280 RACE MOTOR OR THE GRAUPNER SPEED 300 MOTORS.

Yeah, Hobby Lobby should adjust that 280 motor chart then... it makes the Mega-Mig 280 look like twice the strength of a regular 280.... very disappointing to hear it is just a regular 280

I had tested both the MegaMig 280 and a Graupner 280 against each other a long time ago and actually found that the Mig was slower than the Graupner. Nobody believed me then when I mentioned it. I figured I must have gotten a bad one.

I too purchased the Mig280 thinking that it was more powerful than the Mabuchi 280 that I had. I didn't notice a power increase, and even thought that there was less power. I guess It wasn't just my imagination. I did get a Multiplex Permax 280BB. It is really powerful! On 8 1200NiMH's, it pulls around 8.5 amps and swings a 9x6 APC through a 5:1 GB. It may be too powerful for many 280 applications, but for the plane I had it in, it wass really nice.
