All is well! I think everyone needs one of these. Much thanks to Feather for the cut-outs which he will get back real soon. I need to beef up the LG and tail wheel, and well thats about it.
Here is a link http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...34#post6227098 to the maiden video. We are going to try to get up a better quality soon. Much thanks to ThinAir for video and editing. Plane flies great! Edge 1.5.2 I am hoping for 7.5lbs using a smaller motor and batteries. I never went past half throttle for the maiden. Great little plane! Bryce |

I upgraded to Bronze level so I could get a larger video file uploaded. If interested here is the new link http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...65#post6286168

That's what I started with but the repair of the elevator flutter moved my CG so far back that I ended up with the current power system to get CG. The 4130 would not hover the Edge on 6S on a 16X10 but maybe barely on a 17X8. As it is at ~9lb and ~1700W (Guess I should get a 1kW sticker) it is vastly over powered. A 10 min flight uses up about 5/8 of the pack.

I haven't got the nerve up to test the wings with a blender...soon though. Here is a picture of the next one. I think I should make the 7-8lbs without a problem. Now eed to find a good deal on an Axi 41xx and some batteries. Any suggestions on the batteries? I'm thinking 6s and 4000ish mah, but I'm not sure.
I will give the new Spin esc a try as well. |

With a 1"X36" aluminum wing tube the wings are the least of my worries. I think the fuselage between the cockpit and tail is the weak spot on mine. I probably should build another fuse with the wing 1-2" further aft and a lighter tail. Then I should be able to come in at under 8lb.
A good 6S 4000 pack would be fine. 2 TP 3S 4200's would weigh about 20oz. My pair of Tanic 4S 4350's weigh 2lb! |

I meant to say the I'm not ready yet...the plane, well, as always I have proven to have better equipment than I can use.
Thinair supplied me with these dubs for my reg Edge, he said the were the rage in Hollywood, but I thought they would look more appropriate in the bigger plane--I ain't pimpin' for a livin'. Besides, the skinny wheel is just about the same diameter and comes in at 10gr. vs. 60grams. That is about 1/4 pound total right there. I was thinking about your situation with the 41xx and I have made a 1" firewall spacer just in case I can't get the CG just right. You can hardly tell it has a big nose! |

Those do look lighter. I fly off grass and so am using wide wheels.
Sat was really wondewrful. Sunny 70deg and NO wind. Flew the Edge 3 times. It is so quiet and powerful. The 20X10 is the prop for me. With ~10% brake it slows the plane on the downlines and for landing. Flies very much like the small one. I need to get more video shot. |

Feather,
First off I AM going to put your cut-outs in the mail tomorrow! Thank you again and again! The plane flies just marvelously! I still have the shakes when flying, but I have been getting slow rolls 20 feet off the deck followed by 4-6 faster ones at the end of the run way. Did a few flat spins as well this morning. This plane is just way toooo much fun! It floats like the little brother and only needs about 20 verticle feet to recover from a stall. It pulls and accelerates from a hover. I am still waiting for a good deal on an Axi 4130 to put on the 7lbs version. I think that might just be the end all for park fliers! Feather, I was thinking this world could use a 100" version in the 9-11lbs range? Maybe I will get to the copy shop tonight before I send your cut-outs out?????? Bryce |

Sounds interesting, but I think you'll have to find a way to joing the wing 1/2 otherwise transporting the wing might get tricky. Thanks for the offer, but I don't have the time right now. I need to get the other one up, and Fix my other Edge.

Alright! I ordered an Axi 4130, jeti 77, and a prefab motor cgae/mount during Hobby Lobby's Thanks Giving day sale. I ended up paying about $280 for all--not a bad deal. They just arrived too!
I just got off the phone with Bill at SA and he is cutting new wing ribs for the 1.5.2 plane. He said he could get them out next week and ship them with my Ultimate! Bryce |

Feather,
OK, I really mean what I said in post #407 .I finished the Edge 1.5-2 this evening so I thought I would resurrect this thread for ya. I ended up moving the wing back 1" on this one per your suggestion and it made the cg very easy to get. I also beefed up the lg wire which doesn't seem to be an issue anymore. The cowl took a few nights to make but I really like it. I found a cheap little motor that pulls a little more than 1000 watt on a 5s5300 pack with 18x8 apc(only prop I had). The lighter motor and minus one pack give an auw of around 8lbs. Not a 3d but not too shabby for a 75" plane. Perhaps a slightly smaller battery a more powerful motor might make it a real good 3d plane that is affordable to fly(7lbs with 1300-1400watt). Thanks again for everything! You are a very nice and understanding guy. I swear they are in the mail! Bryce |

Feather,
USPS Tracking number #04610406720013037006, priority post guarantied in two days! Don't forget to open it has there is a little some some in there for you! Edge 1.5.2 is ready for its maiden. AUW w/o batteries is 6.25lbs! I couldn't believe it. With battery it should be under 8lbs. I switched motors to a Reaper 60. I saw claims of 1400watts so it should be a perfect match on 5s. So far on 4s (2x2100 Kokam 7.4v20c) I can only get 350watts out of it....I'm blaming the tower hobbies 60 esc on the low numbers. A CC HV 80 is on the way. Do you have any recommendations on the esc settings for this motor? The motor came brand new with zero paperwork from Reaper so I am a little lost. IF it doesn't work out for the 1.5, it will surely work for the 55" 3dhs! Thanks again, Bryce |

hey bry
standard timing is fine use a 15x6 thru 15x8 prop wattage 1100 thru 1400 watts depending on battery packs and the battery setup you have isnt enough you would need qty 2 4s 2200 in parralel , the battery setup you ran would barrly dump 40 amps. scott Quote:

Thanks,
I was fairly sure about the battery situation-thanks for confirming Scott(and quicklly too)! I'm going to try some 4s4000mah 15c packs later today. I found a good deal on the packs, but they are of the unproven over sea variety. I also have a few older 5s5300 thunder f3a packs I might try just to see the numbers. I read the 60a version is a better fit for 5s so I will keep the amps down. I have to fix yet another motor mount on my sa 540 first. How I am able to hit the ONLY thing sticking up in a field is a mistery to me. Thanks, Bryce |

Now I am really ready to maiden this plane. I put a 5s5300 tp pack on the Reaper 60. Numbers speak for themselves! Amazing little motor, but will it survive my torture test?
Scott, is putting 85amps throught the Reaper a little too much? I always abuse my equipment, but I really don't use full throttle too much. If anything I fly 1/2 to 3/4 throttle and your motor puts out 1000 watts at 3/4--more than enough to move the plane around. If the Reaper can withstand 1400watts, I think I found a new motor for more than a few bigger planes. I have a 68" 8lbs Seagull 540 on the board currently so I may be needing another one soon. I will attempt to video the first fight. Should be comical at best! Bryce |
