Hyperion P51D Mustang "25" - Glass

Comment Added Feb 15 2008: Most of this thread refers to the 2006 model hyperion P51. Many changes have been made in productionsince then , and the 2008 versions include a latch-release battery hatch at top of model, in addition to new motor mount, improved retract gear, etc.., etc....

Comments Added Jan 2007: Users in the thread reported vibration problems in some cases, and a weak point in brass actuator rod for retracts. Motor mount and actuator rods have been changed in shipping models, and upgrade motor mount available for free, with small shipping charge. Contact your dealer for details if needed.

Here's some info on the new P51 Mustang "25" from Hyperion, which features a lovely fiberglass fuselage and cowl, scale aluminum spinner, and all-aluminum locking retracts.

Spinner in model pics is non-scale prototype. You can see the scale version spinner in detail pic lower left.

Kit uses Z3025-08 motor with TITAN 50A ESC - 2500mAh to 3300mAh 20C 3S. Flies with authority and large loops from level flight with 10x7 APC "E" (~34A peak), and is a bullet with 10x10 "E" prop (~43A peak). Loops so big you can lose sight of the plane at the top!

Pic of early prototype taken at AC. Star-Bar decals not yet applied on wings.

The Mustang with aluminum retracts and spinner included will be $199.95. Full set with kit, Z3025 motor, TITAN 50A ESC, adapter and connectors will be $359.95, which saves about $33.00 over separate purchase.

We expect the Mustang to debut on Air Craft website around Christmas, and it will be available at Hyperion vendors worldwide by January at latest.

Thanks for the nice comments, everyone. We worked pretty hard on this one...

As for the paint and building, it's just as you see it in the picture. All you have to do is join the wings, and install the servos and other gear. My builder at AC did his second one in 2.5 hours.

A Japanese Ki84 Hayate (aka "Frank") is also in the works, with same design philosopy - glass parts, alumnum spinner and retracts. It will probably be April of 2006 before she's available, though.

Is there a canopy hatch or does the wing have to be removed for battery installation?

Dave,
Are you shipping models to the US?
Thought I remembered a note on your web site about not shipping models to the US.
Do you carry a 3 Blade replacement spinner. Here I go.

He ships to the U.S.....I think the message you remember was that all models had to be shipped EMS I believe which is a bit more expensive than the postage you usually pay on the smaller stuff.

Fine P-51 you have there. While I'm not big on blue <ok I'm friggen blind!> I would really like to see a Hayate in a 40"+ wingspan.

With the recent "super-sized" parkies released I may never look at the Smaller GWS/Alfa/FSK modes again!

<Ok I lied I'm sure Ill always have room for Alfa!>

Once again well done!

Ha! That's the one that caused us weeks of work, back and forth... We wanted a super-slick battery access method, but finally settled on wing removal for these reasons:

Canopy or under-cowl access meant:

1) scale-look sacrifices
2) induced structural weakness
3) which had to be covered by adding weight

and the two bolts to the wing only take a few seconds to remove/install.

The Hayate "25" will have about 48" wingspan. A few months later, a 60" version of the Hayate will be released, for Z4025-10 on 5S 3700mAh.

The Mustangs used 4-blade props, and there just aren't any (that I know of) that would work with the model. You'd probably need something like a 4-blade 9x8 or 9x9 with Z3025-10 motor to get the right speed/thrust. Even if there was one, it would be small "scale wise" and the shape would probably be wrong for the Mustang.

It does occur to me (just now) that VarioProp might be good, though... I'll see what getting VP system to work with the spinner would entail...

David

Here's a Mustang video from S. Sasaki in Chiba Japan:
