New MEGA 400 Size. Suitable for EDF??

Does anyone have any clue, whether the new MEGA AC n 16/15/… series motors are suitable for EDF? If that’s the case, what number of winds is recommended for MF480.

/Kim

It should work okay in a small and light 480MF Jet on up to 200W maybe 250w => kv=3600-4000 on 8cells.

From my previous post on this topic (Search Mega):

New Mega MF-480 motor
Of all places, I was in the local hobbyshop on Friday afternoon and they had a bunch of the new Mega 400 size brushless motors. The price was good too - $69.99 so I picked up the 16/15/3 which has a Kv of approx. 3000 rpm/volt.

I soldered some connectors on the motor today and installed it in a Minifan. The bolt holes are threaded for slightly larger screws than the MF is supplied with - 3mm I think? It's the same size as the 05 car motors use. I widened the slots in the mini fan ever so slightly and worked them outwards a 1/2 mm or so and bolted the motor in using the pair of holes which are a little wider apart. I ran it up on 10 cells and got right at 29K rpm and 200 watts input using a Jeti 70 amp BEC gold label ESC. On 12 CP-1300's it was just over 34K @ about 350 watts with the current draw 23-24 amps. That was pretty much hot off the charger, it held 300+ watts for a long time then faded down towards 280. After a full discharge I measured the motor temp at 87F using a non-contact infrared thermometer. It is chilly today for a change, about 50 degrees. Previous experience has shown that a temp around 90F on a cool day is riht about what you want to avoid overheating on a hot day.

Hi Haldor.

Just a question, what does the kv=3600-400 on 8cells stand for? I’m that familiar with that sort of data. Is it the motor with 3 windings that supposed to be the most suitable for EDF?

Kv is rpm per volt. The 15/3 is the hottest (highest Kv) motor I have seen listed. If they had a 15/2 it would be in the 3600 Kv range and need less cells than the3 wind.

I think there is a 2 turn with a Kv around 4600. It's listed on the www.aircraft-world.com site. It may not be out yet.

I found a 16/15/2 listed at the link below:

http://www.aircraft-world.com/prod_d...ga_16_data.htm

I says it's 4600 rpm per volt. (That's a big jump from the 3 wind @3000 kv)

I am putting a Mega ACn 16/15/3 with a Jeti Master controller in my mini F-86 on ten cells:

I am planning on flying it with the new setup this weekend. The /2 seems a bit too hot for edf applications, but will be a good choice for gearboxes.

Hello Herb
How is it going with the test of the MEGA motor??
I have a friend that hat tested the 2 turn mega and with
8 cels it will give some 560g of thrust. I will now more after this weekend. I think that with those new sanyo 1200 cells it will be the best peformace to weight ratio.
Have read a test on those cells and they will deliver 35A with
no problem , the voltage drop is 1,8V on a 8 cells pack.
Weight is then some 350g on a 10 cell pack. And I gues that complete power system below 500g is possible. with some 250-300W .
How would a EDF plane fly with such setup. if total weight is
below 900g??
Regards
Tomas

is it okay to run the MEGA with just a 30 amps brushless ESC? not necessary to use upto 70 amps right? I am asking because i am tinkering the idea of putting two MF480 in my LearJet and just using MASTER 30 amps ESC, instead of two 70 amps. (due to limited resources!!)

Yes, that is fine. You shouldn't be running that motor much over 25 amps anyway so a 30 amp ESC is fine.

I am testing the new Sony 1700 mAh HR6 AA NMHd cells from Fry's, on the first charge yesterday they took 1950 mAh "in" in my Graupner UDP II charger. Sony conservatively suggests charging them at 2A since they are "rapid charge".

Hello
I have little more info on the New MEGA 2 turn motor.
With 8 cells the curent is around 31A and with 10 cells
it is close 40A the motor did survive that and the speed was violent with a F5 at some 900g.
Regards
Tomas

Tomas, I suppose that's in the MiniFan 480 right? Not bad for a $69 motor. I think 10 cells might be over the limit for long-term durability, but 8 cells looks good with ca. 250 Watts out of a 2.7 oz ( 75 g) motor...
