Converting Century Hawk Pro to electric

I have been offered a Hawk pro and before I buy maybe those who have done this conversion could give a little info:

1.Was it worth it
2.Any problems encountered
3.Info on making the engine mount

Many thanks

1) Yes

2) No

3) See info below. It needs some updating but the basics are still there;

Conversion of the Century Hawk Series Helicopter to Electric Power

The Hawk series helicopters from Century are very easy to convert to electric power and it can be done for around $300-400 depending on the power you want with no mod’s to the stock heli.

For the conversion you need to have a motor mount, motor, ESC, batteries, and pinion for the motor. Only 2 parts are really needed for the conversion besides the power system. A motor mount and pinion.

The stock 26 tooth (1 module) pinion can be used, but only with an adapter I used to make. With the Joker pinions being readily available the stock pinion is rarely used now. The Joker pinion comes in 20,23,24 and 25 teeth. You can also use the Century pinions that come in 12,13 and 14t for HV setups. The 2 stage gear-train works very well for EP helis and allows many ratios.
Only the width is semi-critical but can still vary a mm or so. This mount will allow the use of almost any motor with no problem. The center hole for the motor shaft can be any size that clears the shaft and bearing, .500 in. seems to work nice. The motor mount holes shown can vary with the motor used, and many motors work fine with just 2 screws. I make mine from .060 alum and they hold up great. It can also be made from the Century Predetor radio tray.
The holes on the Side are drilled to match the frame depending on where you mount the motor.

You will need a motor with a KV (RPM per volt) of 800-1000 and I highly recommend a brushless motor and a Heli ESC (electronic speed control). I have used a 650 KV motor but HS is low so more voltage is needed. A heatsink on the motor is highly recommended and both Hacker and Kontronik make a nice one for under $20. The Kontronik Tango 45-8, Mega 22/45/3E or the Aveox 36/38/2 all would work very well.
The Castle Creations Phoenix 45 or 60, or the Kontronik Beat or Jazz are great ESC’s.

The heli will fly nice on 16-20 SC cells or 5s-6s Lithium’s depending on your ratio and how you want the heli to perform. The battery packs can be mounted up front or on the frame sides depending on your setup. I have used the the Vario battery holders (#808-14) and they mount to the Hawk frames with just a couple of screws.

Fred,

Your experiance with the Hawk conversion sounds quite positive. This is good news for me, as I am in the process of assisting a friend who is doing a similar conversion on a set of Hawk mechanics inside a 50 sized Century Airwolf fuselage.

I am interesting in how you made/set-up your motor mount. Do you have any pictures/information/links on your build up?
