Two brushless motors with one ESC is this possible

Ive seen the jinx video, but always thought that two motors with one controller wouldnt work, how does this one work and does anyone else have any experience with this kind of setup. Please post your thoughts and links here

Yes - but only if the motors and controllers are identical. The controller uses feedback from the de-energized winding of the motor's coil to sense where it is - so you can imagine how confusing having TWO motors providing feedback, possibly at different times might be! On my 2 brushless camera ship, I chose the 2 ESC route

There have been many reports of succesfull use of two brushless motors on one esc.
There have been many reports of it NOT working too.
Obviously the Jinx folks are getting it to work.

The ESC makers will tell you NOT to do it.

The risk is if one motor fails to start you will get very hi currents thru the esc. Its a big possibility you could let the smoke out

I prefer one esc for each motor.

Here is a picture of two motors running on one esc. The motors are kit built Komodo Hobby CDR motors and the esc is a CC P-25. I was careful to build the motors exactly alike and connect them to the esc identically. The motor start reliably and run in perfect synch. They have been flown in the bomber model many times.

Clearly some people have put together combos that work, but others have had problems with this. The most common problem seems to be that one motor starts and the other doesn't -sometimes- on startup. If it's a plane that will always fly under throttle then this may not be an issue for you, if both motors don't start you just throttle off and back on until they do, then take off. But if you might be shutting the throttle off and on while flying, it could get ugly if only one motor starts. Luckily BL ESCs are really coming down in price, so using 2 isn't such a big outlay of cash these days.

If you want to shut your motors down in flight, just have some height... then if it's getting picky about starting, point the nose down, get the props windmilling... and then put some throttle on. I'm sure this would start them. Was done back in the good old days of aviation when motors weren't all that reliable.

Actually, I found the opposite to be true. When I first tried flying my motors I had the esc set to "soft brake". When I shut down the motors they kept windmilling and for some reason they would not restart in the air. They restarted fine on the ground.

I reset the esc to "hard brake" so that the props would stop in the air and they have restarted OK ever since.
