Hovercraft skirt design

Hi, has anyone built a hover craft? What suggestions do you have for skirt shape ad material?

I have the thing running nicely with no skirt but I get about 2mm ground clearance. This is fine for skidding around on my wodden floor but I think stability and ground clearance are required for more fun applications.

Help gratefully rec'd

A search in this forum for "hovercraft" would find you this thread :

Plenty of good links in there. If you look under Files and Bookmarks on the Yahoo site you'll find plenty of design material including specific skirt design. There are also complete plans.

Steve,
Did the search, read the thread got the t-shirt! The best advice is that skirt design is critical and tough! Ya, got that bit right

Having read the thread I just wondered if there was any other info around.

I'll give it a go and post designs.

Hmm very neat. If mine doesn't work I might go buy one.

Mine is using a gws edf50 for the lift and a vectored thrust kp00 with a forward reverse esc (PCB straight out of an old servo).

I use the left hand throttle stick to control the lift fan, the right stickgive forward/reverse, left/right control.

The platform/body is 1/4" foam, nice light components, don't need big stuff. Pics to follow when I get the skirt sorted.

The rational came from weeks of unflyable weather. I thought what can I actually fly indoors apart from the hoverfly that doesn't eat my light fittings.........go low, go slow, go agile...flight level zero at zero mph, turn on a dime = hovercraft!

The Taiyoedge unit is really great..it has a lifting fan and 2 independent fans for forward turning and reverse. The electronics
comprises of a 2 speed switch and 2 variable esc that can handle
up to 5 amps. It runs on 8 cells, great fun on land and water.

I took it to our indoor meet(slowfly) and ran it that on 2 smooth
basket court. Everyone had a go at it and they didnt want to give
it back to me It is very difficult to do fast circuit..takes abit of mastering.

Acoording to my manual u can get replacement skirt easily. I was
going to modify my 2 thrusters to sp300..make it ballastic in water. And maybe sometime later I will replace the plastic body with a lighter balsa construction.
