Yesterday I flew the Mini Ultra Stick at the local Las Vegas electric club flying field and everyone was absolutely amazed by the performance of this model! This particular model is equipped with 4 S75 servos (no quad flaps, but flaperons can be used) and the new Park 450 outrunner motor using the new E-flite 10x8E prop (EFLP1080E). Max current draw is 15 amps when using 3S 2100 packs (160 watts of input power) delivering great speed and nearly unlimited vertical for the 21 ounce model. Its hard to beat this setup for all around sport flying and great duration using 2100mAh packs (It allows the use of 1320mAh packs too).

However if you are looking for even more vertical performance and speed, especially when built with quad flaps and using an additional BEC or receiver pack, I would suggest one of the new Park 480 motors that will be available about the same time as the MUS. If you have lots of 10-12C discharge capable 2100mAh packs on hand, go with the 910Kv motor and an 11x7 or 12x6E prop. Max current draw will be around 22 amps, delivering extremely strong vertical performance (we use this power package in the Mini Funtana with great results). If you have 15C discharge capable 2100mAh packs on hand (like Thunder Power Pro Lite 2100s), go with the 1020Kv motor and an 11x7 or 12x6E prop. Max current draw will be around 28 amps, delivering incredible vertical performance (we use this power package in the Mini Edge and the vertical power is outrageous!).

For most pilots who will fly the MUS though, just like all of those guys who were at the field yesterday and saw the model fly or had the chance to fly it, the Park 450 setup will be perfect for great power and the best possible duration when using 1320-2100mAh packs. With the 450 motor and 10x8E prop Im actually able to hover the model and slowly climb vertically with full power. The speed is very good too, offering a perfect blend of smooth and strong performance.

As a note, all of the motors recommended above fit the included outrunner firewall perfectly with no modifications required for installation in the MUS. You cant go wrong with any of them!

it seems like outrunners are the wave of the future. i always thought a high performance geared inrunner was more powerful and efficient.

TX, the inrunner and gearing gives you more options where you are pretty stuck with the outrunners and the prop choices that the motor works with. For instance, you can put the 2500 in a "C" gearing with a smaller diameter prop and really pull some speed out or you can go into a "D" gearing with a 12x6 and go crazy. However, the outrunner does what it does at the best prop. Nothing to really play with but a few prop sizes in the range.

A way that I think of it is like this... A Glow engine runs the same you only have a few prop choices to get the performance you want. Same thing with an outrunner. As long as you are putting a .60 size motor on a .60 size plane you've got great performance. However, with an inrunner, you can put a .50 size motor on a .60 size plane and gear it to get pretty close to .60 size performance.

Gee, now I'm confused. For my money, I like outrunners but I also really love the Razor 2500. Infact, if you decide to sale the rz and it's in good shape. Just PM me.

i know the advantages of gearing , but i thought with the same prop and battery, an inrunner was more powerful and efficient -from an engineering standpoint. (disregarding noise factor)

Yep, but I've always considered the efficiency lost in gearing to negate the efficiency difference. Maybe I'm wrong.

i have noticed too that outrunners usually have a lower amp limit than inrunners of the same watt class.

Than they're not the same watt class.

250 watts on 3s li-po = 22.5 Amp draw regardless of motor. V x A = Watts

Wonder how a axi 2826 12 would do on it. Only reason I ask is I've got one, with a 35 amp speed control and need home for it.

That is about 2-3 motor sizes too big...You might have to mount the batteries in the tail to get it to balance.
