F-15 Micro Jet/PLantraco Electronics

After building the F-15 SHock Flyer from Depron Daves posted plans, I decided to go a tad bit smaller. Here is the result after cutting the center out of a half dozen foam dinner plates.

Wingspan-5"
Length-7.5"
Weight minus electronics-2 grams
Motor to be used SS 7mm orange bell
Prop custom built 1.5" pusher
Radio TX/RX Plantraco-(to be ordered)
Batt- 30mah-90mah (have yet to test)

You may want to make a larger airframe, 5" is the size of a 4mm driven jet, and 2g airframe is far too heavy. A 9"WS jet with a 2.5g airframe, of the same model, with the 7mm motor and 60mAh cell will be much more usable then your current, but dont forget the way you built it, it looks very well built :-)

I'm with Pete on this. See my F-22 is a little marginal but fun to fly at 14 grams using the 05 power system. Going to put a gearbox with a super slick 7mm in it to give it some jet like zip. Oh it 14 grams all up.

Thanks Pete and thatovalguy,
I may go to a smaller motor with this one. I had different ideas setups listed and this was the most powerful motor I cared to use on the model. I have many other motors from zip zap and bit cars ect. I would like to use nothing higher than a 90mah cell though.
Any other suggestions?

Micro_F-15

After adding a 4mm motor to the F-15 weight increased to 3 grams.
I added 2 grams balast to find the correct COG and represent plantraco RX and Batt for a combined weight of 5 grams.
Once the model was balanced, I gave it an ever so soft toss and was rewarded with a flat glide of almost 20 feet.
I don't know about some of ya's but to me, that is excelent!!! For a model with a flat plate wing to glide like a free flight model; I can't help but believe something is working (in my favor).

Any suggestions? As I plan to utilize your equiptment in this model.

My #1 suggestion: Better foam.
Using 'Wallpaper insulation' foam, I've made a 6" span F-22 airframe which weighs .4g, also an F-35 with a 8" span weighing 1.2g or so, meant to be powered with the 6 and 7mm motors. You really need to cut down on the weight to make her fly, there is VERY little chance the 4mm motor will provide enough thrust for that jet at it's current weight, even if the battery and radio weighed nothing.

Oh, my icon is the F-22 I speak of.

I am flying a 16'' edf with 185grams weight and microfan. I think a little more motor power will be nice. Weight is not so cruical on a jet. Jets have to be fast

I was flying a 8" span mustang last night using the butterfly receiver two 30mAh cells soldered in parallel, a hinge-act actuator on the rudder and a 4.5ohm 6mm pager in the nose. There was enough power for pylon raceing and when the 0.38g 2ch unit comes back it should be aerobatic.

At 5" you can probably get your model to fly using a 4mm motor but I think it is a little on the heavy side. With a 6mm motor it would be very exciting. 7mm is for outdoors if that.

Thankyou all for your response to this thread.

As I posted in one of my earlier posts, I have many little motors and will experiment to find the one that best suits my needs. To me that is a lot of the fun factor when trying something like this. I did however not want to hit too many dead ends therefore I asked questions.

What was the weight of your mustang? If I install the plantraco equiptment I will be between 5-6 grams AUW. For vertical performance I would need at least that in thrust.
Though that would be ideal, I would like to achieve between park flyer and vertical performance. Kinda a happy medium.

Tonight I took the Micro F-15 outdoors with 2.5 grams balast and gave it slow tosses for 15 minutes. It's glide was very long, smooth and flat. I did notice that if I tossed it a wee bit harder it would balloon up, settle in and continue to glide landing 30+ feet in front of me. I don't know the specs on the jet config type models but this thing is floating like the FF models I used to build from Sal Taibi plans. Forward speed seems to be along the lines of maybe 2 meters per second.

Final Glide test results are in

This evening I did final testing on the F-15 before installing electronics.
Results are as follows:

Model with clay ballast weighed in at 6.0 grams
Stop watch and tape measurements showed the following:

10 test glides from 6' altitude resulted in 19'-35'range
Test #1: 22.8' in 5.2 seconds
Test #2: 19.25' in 4.7 seconds
Test #3 26.90' in 5.9 seconds
Went like this till the finnal toss which ballooned on me (not stalled) Kinda like caught a mini thermal. result was 35.725' in 7.1 seconds

Now for the real chore.

Long posts like this are absolutly ok I think! One of the main reasons I like to read these forums is to see how people arrived at the point of knowledge the are at. Finished results are one thig, but seeing the process can be very enlightening.

Rigorous testing done methodically is a Very Good Thing (TM)

I enjoy the long posts that follow thought processes as well. Please keep the information coming. Pictures of successful flights are one thing but it does nothing to help would be designers make their dream planes fly.

I will weigh the mustang. It may be that you have just the same wing area or more as the body will add to the wing area. I wasn't taking that into account.

The glide will come down a lot to the wing loading, judging by the glides you get the wing loading is very good for a 5" model.

For the flight performance you want I would definately edge towards the 6mm direct drive and an etec 90mah or a kokam 60mAh or a pair of plantraco 30's in parallel.

I agree, the fuselage of this plane should add a lot of lift... especially since it is longer than the wingspan...
