The benefit is that you can program them as flapperons. That's nice when trying to slow it down for landing. The drawback is the extra 1/4 oz of weight, and that it takes up more room.

I got 2 flights on mine yesterday, along with one landing. OOPS!

I had forgotten to program in some expo and dual rates on the ailerons, which really would have been nice. It was about 4 foot off the deck on a speed pass and I just dumb thumbed it at full speed. Even though I had glassed the front of the fuse with 1.7 oz cloth, it prety much exploded. Of course, that's what I would have expected it to do at that speed.

I'm not sure how fast it was going, but it was the fastest thing I've flown so far, even with a S400 and 2S LiPo. Level flight is fast already, but when you point the nose down it flat out HAULS!

Two other benefits of dual servos are twice the thrust and redundancy in the event of gear stripping.

Unrelated to this wing, a another benefit is the ability to locate the servos outboard, which can sometimes simplify linkage to wingtip ailerons. Has anyone mod'ed the design to wingtip ailerons and seen how that effects speed retention in turns?

Brian,

Ouch that hurts to hear about your loss of the Slipso400. Glad it was giving you a good turn of speed though. I don't suppose you have any pictures of the corpse?

Chainlink,

I'm somewhat disinclined to take ailerons all the way out to the tips, on most of my planes in fact. Leaving some outboard area 'untouched' means that you've got a greater chance of avoiding the dreaded tip-stall. The other thing it helps avoid of course is the equally destructive surface flutter. Even though we're dealing with relatively short aileron(s) here it doesn't take a lot for a flutter to develop.

Forgive me, my thought was poorly communicated. I was thinking of reducing the length of the ailerons (from nearly full lenth to 1/2 length - while increasing throws/or depth if necessary to maintain responsiveness).

I am not well versed in aerodynamics - but would not be surprised if this would increase the potential of tip stalling.

I have finished building my Slipso, is ready to finish the gear.
I was going to buy a GWS 480li speed control but did not find
it in stock. Need a suggestion for another control - the GWS is
cheap & that is what I need.
Motor Promax 400 MPI - Maxx products 6v

Someone mentioned in a earlier post about wanting landing gear on their
plane. Did you ever see the faired in wheel on the bottom of a GLH 1/2a
racer? It might be a good solution.

I was admittingly more thinking of the LG like that of the RedBull racers - of course they're not pure-speed beasts but you get the idea.

I have some of their servos in a flat foamie plane, seem to work fine.

try united hobbies for really cheap ESC's. Hextronik is the brand I think?

I got 2 120A units for $42USD each...

Thanks for the info. I guess my real question if if a 25A speed control will be adequate
for my Slipso. I am plum stoopid (a little Alabama lingo there) when it comes to
electronics.

I think pldaniels list the recomended motor/battery/esc in the build manual on his web page. While not a speed 400 version, the brushless version did mention a 25 amp esc.

foamy slipso

heres something diffent, a full fuse foam slipso. the wing and tail r airfoiled. ill be useing the 80 watt 2cell gws out runner. no it wont be real fast, but ive ran this motor in a small wing and it flew good. im guessing it will do allmost 40 mph. but it should clime like a bandit! the air frame weighs allmost nothing. im more woried about flutter. im going to tape the wing and hope it stays together. it has a carbon spar.not sure this really belongs on this thread but thought you would like to see this .ill post more later as thie build progresses, c ya

Great build Stroland. I am probably going to build a foamie version as well. Please post some flight vids to inspire us.

Right now I am musing over getting hotwire and vacuum bag supplies - figure a vac bagged airfoil would be a good addition (but mostly just don't feel like ordering balsa at the moment). I have already tried to test brown paper lamination on the foam (but without laminating both sides I got wild warping), and tested tissue lamination (but used foam eating glue on that test...)

stroland,

That would be quite interesting to see in flight. twisting along the length of the wing would be the biggest issue. Good luck with it, would love to see it in flight
