OK Paul,

Thanks for the heads up. I'll try to see what I can do. Another question if it doesn't bother you: how do I mark the aileron outlines on? Do I do it before (I don't think so, after all the planing, the markings would disappear!!!), or after planing and sanding? If so, how?

Uzzy

uzzy,

For the ailerons, once you have completely finished your wing (yes, you wait till that stage), you then flip it over so that the bottom faces up, take your wing plan printout and either push a pin through the plan/wing at the corners of the ailerons or use a pencil and push through. After that you can cut through the two sides of the aileron and then cut -almost- through to the other side with the long part of the aileron (if you've covered the wing with film), this allows you to have your ailerons hinged without needing to use any tape Don't worry if you cut all the way through though, you can just use tape like normally done.

Ultimately, don't worry - it's not supercritical with the size of the ailerons, after all, I just used TLAR principles .

A newbie question:

Would a Graupner 6x3 folder prop work on 8cells on this plane? It gives more thrust to aid in lauching but with a lower top-speed. It will sure help to prevent broken props on landing...

pldaniels, I would like to see what you will come up wih on a landing gear setup for this wonder plane.

Oh noooooooooooooooooooo!!! The plan says use 3.2mm sides, but I used only 1/16" balsa. Heh! Maybe I shall glue another layer of 1/16" on the sides. Ha ha!

Launching thrust is all about throwing hard, fast and up at the right angle A 6x3 on 8 cells might actually be a bit too excessive. Can you get something more like 5x2.5 ~ 3 ?

*laugh* don't feel so bad. Actually, yes you can just add another sheet of 1/16" on the outside, it'll be stronger (assuming it's glued right) than a single sheet of 1/8".

I see you're going to be using a BL motor - which one is that?

Paul.

It's a Justgofly 300DF - supposed to be a direct 400 motor replacement. Since I feel a bit cheapskate (didn't want to buy a new motor) and had the motor lying around, I thought I might as well use it for more power.

I'm sure it'll be very good fun What's its Kv rating? What prop are you going to throw on it ? Since it's an outrunner will you need to rather use a larger prop?

Not really, it's a 400 replacement. Kv is about 2200. I think I'll use a 5x5 APC on 2s. The problem is, it comes with a 3mm shaft, and I will have to do a spinner myself! The shops don't sell them.

Ah yes... this plane looks like a winner. I just finished planking the sides with another 1/16" piece!

2200 @ 7.4V ~= 16krpm, not too bad, on a 5x5 prop you've got a theoretical 125km/hr top speed.

How did you plank the sides? What glue did you use?

Paul.

I just added another sheet of 1/16" balsa to the sides. Glued the whole piece down with CA and cut it out using the current sides as a "ruler".

Nice 125km/h! I need a spinner! I bought a prop adaptor, but it didn't come with a spinner. Let's see what we can do. Ha ha.

I got my spinner from Aircraft World, it's a MPJets 30mm spinner with a 2.3mm collet, obviously with your 3mm situation you're going to run into some issues. You could always make one out of balsa/foam.

Cool! Fuse is done, shaped and rounded! I even got something extra from the Master Airscrew plane - a cut on the thumb! The fuse wasn't spared with my building skills, I got a banana !

Yeah!!!
