csisfun,

There isn't really a "fixed point" to peak the airfoil but now that you mention it I might actually mark one in. Plans are certainly one of those progressive things

Sarge,

Thanks for your trolling

You're right, I have smashed up two already, fortunately the 2nd crash was less severe than the first (I'll only have to make a new fus, not a wing).

What I did notice when I was picking up the parts was that the batter was HOT... couldn't hold it, had to grab it by the lead in the end *ouch* Motor was also hot as before.

I'll be ordering 50~100 IB1200's from Cheapbatterypacks later on when I have some more $$$. For now I'll have to either straighten these bent motor shafts or sit around doing nothing until my next shipment of goods comes from GWS.

Looking much like the previous one, here's a picture of the rebuild process. You'll notice I've used the same wing, since it was perfect, not a scratch (from the accident).

Well it's all done - Slipso #3 taxies out to the runway for its maiden in about 8 hours time.

Here's a few pictures of it -before- heading for the big sky.

Flight Report

All went well - except breaking the control horn off on the landing (that's what I get for using an oversized horn).

My battery pack (8 x 5/4AAA 830mA NiMH) is really giving up the ghost, I must must must get some better cells, I wouldn't be surprised if I'm getting less than 7 cell performance simply due to the high internal-resistance of these 5/4AAA's.

Agree with you on the cells. Also what prop is that. Pretty wide blades for a pylon model. You might find by going to a graupner cam or the other APC pylon props (forget what they are called - maybe sport) you will go better again. Those wide blades have got to be eating up some watts.

cheers, Shawn

G'day Shawn, how's things down south? (Damn hot up here again).

The prop is the APC5.1x4.5 "wideblade", just happened to have a few lying around the place.

I do also have some APC4.1x4.1's which are a bit lacking in thrust but ho boy they /sound/ good when I run them on the SP400

I think I'll make an order today with Aircraft-world for a few APC assortments. Have also been looking at cheap-battery-packs and thinking I'll get 3 packs of CBP750's and 3 packs of IB1200's or CBP1050's (if I'm running out of money )

I like the 4.7 x 4.2 APC prop. Seems to match a Speed 400 pretty good.

Heather,

Thanks for that - what battery pack are you using with it?

I am thinking of ordering the 4.7x4.2 and 4.75x4.75's

With 8cells, 4.75x4.75 should go nicely . May be a bit hot but if you don't mind shortish motor life it will be ballastic. While at ACW have a look at their 400's. They work well.

Muggy here today, so whilst not overly hot, very uncomfortable. Looks like rain for the next 4 days so probably no flying for me (will be up at the crack of dawn tomorrow though, might get a couple of flights in). Still looks like I will just have to do some more model building this weekend....

Shawn,

I'll try my 4.1x4.1 again today - one thing is for sure is that it /sounds/ wicked on 8 cells

Wind is a bit high, even for racing, pushing past 25km/hr here which does make a noticable difference when turning down-wind.

I put in some 2/3AA 800mA 7 cell packs today, could have easially fit 8 cells in there I think - oh well, the weight saving and better cell structure definately helped matters as I get about the same run time as the old 5/4AAA pack but better flight performance due to the lighter airframe. Outright speed doesn't seem to be all that different.

When I bought these packs, I /thought/ they were 2/3A 1200mA cells, because the sticker (store sticker) said 1200mA ... BZZZZT, incorrect stickering *sigh*. Anyhow, for now these 800mA packs are doing well for practice.

Paul,

I will try to build one of these, but how do I shape the wing to an airfoil? I don't know how to do that for a wing with sweep and taper, could you care to explain?

csisfun,

It's actually rather simple. You see on the plan there's a curved line that's about 1" in from the outline of the wing, mark that on your rough shaped block of balsa and then carve off the wood from that area to the middle of the edge of the leading edge and the bottom of the block for the trailing edge.

In actuallity, it's not too critical, just so long as it looks like an airfoil of sorts and is smooth.

Well, I'm out of the race for the next week or so, broke my last APC prop

I think I might seriously consider putting some Nemesis like LG on the Slipso just to prevent the broken props. The landings aren't even that agressive, a lot are greasers now, I just get unlucky I suppose.
