Hey Iceman,
A rudder on this plane looks like useless for me!
why not a single servo on your v tail?

Mostly to make the takeoff with higher power less torqey, to add a trim feature, and as a safety in the case of servo failure. My old F5D and Speed 400 V-tail racers used single servos for the tail. They worked great, but I always wanted another trim feature to help in the turns. I usually trimmed by adding weight to either tip to make the turn symmetrical. The rudder would add the ability to trim this out. I plan to use 5gr servos for the tail and 9 gram servo for the ailerons.

I also want to see how effective the rudder-vator is for use in my new F5D design. This will make launching by myself much easier as I don't have a flying partner around here.

Well into my build ... but I can't seem to get the plans to download and print the right size. After downlloading I take the disc to the printer and they keep printing slightly smaller than the short kit. Tried changing the percentage on the printer but they keep printing the same size. Any suggestions?????

I have to select 'Page scaling - None' in my printer options to get it the right size.

Well....I give up trying to print out the plans to the scale of the short kit. I think it has something to do with me downloading to the laptop then trying to print from the ole desktop PC. Build is coming along....elevator servo is in and I am trying to decide just how to install my hatch above it and the hatch just behind the firewall.

Arcticflyer ,It's an easy build but maybe this hatch idea....I've seen some "GREAT" ideas from guys with making breather holes and custom hatches .A simple magnet and hing worked for me but my backup will be alittle different.

I haven't flown anything as small and fast as I expect the slipso to be. I am planning on going with this as a colour scheme on top. Black under the wings and tail, white fus and rudder to aid visibility.

Plans really aren't necessary if you have the mountain models kit, it only fits together one way! I made both mine without any sort of hatch. Then I had to cut the rear open to replace the hobbycity elevator servo that died so I really didn't save any effort. Skipped the hatches on my second and haven't missed them yet.

Crash- That is a nice install on the hatch!! That is a cool paint job to!! I finished my front hatch today it looks similar but I used a screw instead of a magnet.

Biskit- Like you I know I'm gonna glue that back lid down and have to get at that servo. I'm putting a hatch in it tomorrow. My reason for wanting the plans to scale is to make a custom sander in the shape of the airfoil for final sanding of the wing. Guess I'll just have to eye ball it.

Where are you guys stickin your receivers? Behind the elevator servo or in the battery bay?

Plans don't show an airfoil shape? I sanded my first wing and it was a PITA, got a razor plane for the second and it's easy to take deep cuts evenly from each side and keep it fairly symmetrical without trying hard, but I've only roughed in the wing so far.

Receiver in the back wouldn't balance on my first one, but my tail was a bit heavy too. I wouldn't glue it in the back without checking that you can balance without adding weight first.

biskit- Thanks, that receiver is another reason why I think I am going to put the hatch in the back today. My tail is probably gonna be a little heavy as well...I decided to glass it for strength. I am however gonna hang an outrunner on the outside of the firewall so that will help with the heavy tail. It will also help with the whole cooling thing.

I am seriously thinking of making a built up wing like one I saw a couple of pages back. I have never tried to carve a wing. I'm a good builder I'm just not sure about my carving skills.

Im thinking about buying the short kit, but was wondering what else I will need besides the basic building material to finish this project. Does it need an iron on film or can i just paint it? Any help would be appreciated.

I am about 2/3 of the way through the build. You will need 2 sticks of 6mm triangle stock to complete the fuz. I am glassing and painting mine. 2oz glass from the wing forward....1.5oz from the wing back and .75oz on the wing. You will need some carbon for the bottom of the wing and like Paul says a whole lot of patience!!!!!!!!!!!! I read this thread (most of it) and looked at all of the pictures both here and on Paul's site befor I started the build. I might have missed a few things if I had not. Good Luck!

Scaling up to 125% has left a lot of room in the fuselage for all the bits and a 4 cell 2200mah battery fits in with ease. I have made minor mistakes by not scaling up my materials but I expected that before perfecting the second build. I've just bonded two 3/8 x 4 x 36 inch sheets together which will be the basis of the wing but thats an awfull lot of shaping! The servos will go in the wing but I'm not sure what size to go with in a plane I expect to exceed 125mph. I'm guessing that 9g servos will work fine in the ailerons as they work in my Funjet up to 110mph with no issues but the tail will be an HS81.

The mountain models kit is the wood only. You need to make the pushrods/linkages and control horns. You'll also need a couple blind nuts and screws to hold the wing on. The kit says you need a piece of blasa triangle stock, but I simply used the scrap wood from the kit and cut my own. It wasn't pretty, but it's hidden inside the airplane. I left mine bare balsa and it's held up great, but you will need some color on it to be able to see it - I just painted the wingtips and rudder/elevator with some cheap safety orange paint and it's easy to see.
