gear drive or not?

HI, i,ll try to be breif, so here goes.
i have built a tiny that i got plans for from Todds models page. Instead of the dc1717 i used a much cheeper s-280. wing span 24" approx 215-220 sq. inch. My all up has come to be about 10.5 oz. more than i wanted.

I justed finished tonight.

My question is, with this size and weight plane should i use a gear drive with the 280? It is now set up as direct drive with a prop off of a firebird XL. 6.5" tip to tip, have no idea of the pitch, its not much.

So what do you all think.

Thanks, Steve

It depends on the plane really, but geardrive tend to be more effecient unless you want just speed.

Is the AUW 10.5 oz, or is it 10.5 over what you wanted?

The Tiny is not a speed machine, and AUW will be important. You may want to look at a GWS setup if the 1717 is to $$$.

Many of these little planes are designed for certain motors and props, without much leeway.

Go with a 3:1 geardrive- the Titanic units don't add much weight at all and will increase your thrust plenty- important for vertical maneuvrability. Your real question is batteries- you may be able to get away with an 8 cell 300 NiMH which will save some weight, or the next lightest is a 7 cell 350 nicad. At that weight though, you may be happiest on an 8 cell 720 NiMH pack. Don't use 600 AE nicads.

Yes the aup is 10.5 oz. total. Just had to try it. 7 cell 270 It glids great, straight to the ground after about ten yards with full power. got to do something. Must go now. will check back soon. Steve

You need thrust, not airspeed so use a GB.
