hooking up lipo's in series
I have purchased a DC-3 from Polk hobbies and it has 2-600 size brushed motors. I may go brushless if it doesn't fly. There are mixed opinions on this plane with the stock set-up
Instead of a heavy huge brick of NiMh's i would like to buy 2 or 3 batteries, 3 cell, 2100mah lipos and hook them up in series. They would only be used in this plane or anther like it, always together. Good idea? I'm not fond of buying a big lipo pack, for like $200 and crash and damage the pack and have to through it away. Also can I charge the lipo brick as a reg 3 cell (all together)?

I believe you mean connect in parallel not series. A 3 cell LiPoly battery would be 11.1 volts (nominal) and 12.45-12.6 V charged. Connecting two 2100 mAh ones in parallel would still be 11.1 V but would be 4200 mAh capacity. Please note that many brushed motors do not handle this high of voltage well. One LiPoly cell is approximately equivalent to 3 NiCad or NiMH cells. If you use LiPolys you will need a LiPoly safe ESC or time your flights and watch voltage very closely. LiPolys are seriouly damaged by overdischarging them.

If you hook up three 3s1p 2100 lipos in series, you will have a 9s1p 2100...That's over 33 volts! Are you sure you didn't mean hooking them up in parallel? This will get you a 3s3p 6300 mAH pack at 11.1 volts.
Either way, you can do it. Just make sure you are using similar packs and that they are within .1 volts before you connect them. If you connect them in parallel with some Y-connectors, then you just charge them like a normal 3 cell lipo but just bump up the amps to charge at 1C.
