Hot Wire Bow - Train Transformer

Hello, I have a 30 year old Lionel Train transformer. The specs on it show
a maximum output of 15 volts and 45 watts. That tells me this puppy has
3 amps output max.

Question, can this power up to a 24" bow using .020 stainless steel wire
for cutting EPS. I know for cutting EPP I'd probably need more power.

Thanks,

Phil

if you are using the full 24" for panel cuts - you may be underpowered, Rat Shack has a 5am 12 volt transformer if you are - else you can try a car battery charger.

I tried a train transformer and it was not hot enough. Your better off with the battery charger or a home built power supply.

I use a train transformer for small jobs, usually a few inches. Works great for that, but I never tried a 24" sheet. I use guitar string. You might be able to get 24" with the thinnest guitar string.

I plug a cheapo car battery charger into a light dimmer or fan speed controller. Works great and have used up to 30" of .015 piano wire. There was plenty power available, I'm sure it will run much longer wire. The dimmer/controller switch cost I think about $8 and the car battery charger I got at a garage sale or thrift store for $10. The dimmer controls input to the charger and is easy to adjust.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! It looks like battery charger/light dimmer may be an easy solution.
