I use a hitec peak detection charger that works fine for nimh batteries. False peaks tend to happen more with nimh packs at higher charge levels. I charge 270s at less than 1 amp, and 600s at less than 1.5 amps. This seems to keep false peaks to a minimum, and lets me fly right away without waiting for the pack to cool.
Lithium cells need a special charger.

To be clear, I believe most peak detection chargers will work, not just Hitec.

Although many people do use them successfully, be aware that there are a few posts out there about Hitec chargers missing the peak when charging Nimh cells. I use a Super Nova, which has a specific setting for Nimh.

Be sure and get one that was designed for charging NiMH cells. The "peak" of NiCd's and NiMH batteries is different and it is important that the circuit be designed to recognize the NiMH peak. The peak V drop detection for NiCd is 15-20mv/cell. For NiMH it's 5-10mv/cell. For an 8 cell pack, that is 160mv for a NiCd and 80 for a NiMH. If the charger was designed to look for the 160mv "drop" in voltage for a NiCd, it would probably cook a NiMH cell waiting for the "big" voltage drop.
Having said all that, The Astro 110D is just one of many that was designed to "see" the NiMH peak. Check the manufacturers specs before you buy is my recommendation.

ps... Manufacturers recommend 1C as max. Check your charger manual to see what they recommend.

The Orbit chargers have a nimh setting, and so do the Schultz(infinity?) units.

The Mutiplex/Dymond new mini charger does them too up to 8 cells and is $40.

The Great Planes ElectricFly Peak Charger, GPMM3000, indicates it will peak charge both NiCd and NiMH packs, 6 to 8 cells, at 200 or 600 mA (selectable; pulsed charge). I have used it extensively on NiCds but have not tried NiMHs. It plugs into your car's 12v power port or cigarette lighter and is conveniently small.

i like the Astro 110D and have been using it for a year to charge NIMH from the little ones (110ma) the John Worth sells to the larger ones from Hobby Lobby for the 280 sizes (550ma). I use mostly 270ma NiMH in my planes and liked the charger so much that I just bought another. You know how it is--I have to have a "lifetime" supply of goodies that I use in modeling!

I have both the hitec cg-335 and a newly acquired dymond supersmart.. Although the hitec works on NiMH.. peaks are a bit warm, and you really should monitor the charge.. The dymond charger does them perfect everytime do to a dedicated NiMH mode.. Dymond charger was also only 109 bucks... Hitec was 89 I think.

The SIRIUS charger use peak prediction rather than detection. Claims to minimize overcharge damage.

I haven't used a peak prediction charger, which I assume means it cuts the charger off on the upside of the peak rather than the downside, but from my experience and info from the temp/V graphs, most of the battery heating takes place after the battery reaches peak voltage. Therefore, it sounds like a great idea. Wish I had it on my Astro 110D.

I have a Great Planes ElectricFly Charging ant tried it with 600NimH 7 cells. Worked great, took 55mins then it flashed 12 times, then goes into 15ma trickle charge. Happy with it so far.

For $42.90 from Hobby Lobby try the Graupner Ultramat 5. It is designed for NCD and NMH and will charge up to 8 cells with anything from .1 amp to 5.0 amps, all automatically. Mine works great and it comes with a plug already on it for your cigarette lighter. Tom

Orbit all the way. My Microlader V6.0 will easily handle nimh and pretty much everything else. And itīs cheap too!

I have use the Electrifly charger on my Nimh batteries and have been very happy with it. I believe after its done charging each flash represents 5 minutes of charge time it took.
