Pics from new AP platform ...Today 21 Aug 05

Took my new AP Platform out for a maiden flight today… I am calling it the Slowstick XL.

I am happy with the initial results. A build thread is started for those interested in how I did the mod.

My goal was to get a Platform that fly's slow and “carries the Mail”. I have been experimenting with filters and will soon have down link video. So payload capability was starting to be an issue with my trusty stock SS.

This SS XL airplane is more stable. I have already noticed a great improvement in the quality of my photos. I get about 40% less blurred shots!

The down side is a less maneuverability. I could easily fly the Stock SS just about anywhere with just about any wind. The SS XL is less maneuverable. A polyhedral wing would have been a better option but I opted for ease of construction. As aspect ratio goes up the rudder effectiveness goes down. Future plans will include Spoilers. A La my spoiler mod!

While I was up I was able to thermal and “speck out” the SS XL with ease!

Enjoy!
Bert

Caught a Hawk while thermaling

...while I was thermaling a hawk buzzed over to take advantage of the free lift. Soon 3 others joined...

They quickly out climbed me so I did not get any more shots.

Nice!

Awesome!

Typical Norcal Summer...brown...burnt...Oh..but hey...lets make sure we water the golf course!!

No water for model airplane field though..."You're on your own"...
Not even for (fire prevention)..."Here...take a couple of water fire extinguishers"....ever try to run out to a burning plane with 70lbs of water through star thistle?? ACK...

Oh ya...classic "bird poo on the wind sock" shot....

Nice shots...

Second hop after minor tweeking in the shop

Round two... Crazy Herb and I went to Camp Far West Res. this afternoon... little breezy but not too bad. I re-engineered my rudder linkage geometry and WOW! ... It’s a whole new airplane. This thing is rock solid!

It fly’s so slow you can watch all the control surfaces move as it slowly fly’s out of your hand and climbs away… sort of like watch the Goodyear blimp take off.

Flying tight in and around the bridge was no problem even with the dirty air coming off the dam and levee!
