[B]tow, the fences will go on there at some point. Spanwise flow, what's that, you mean fly slow ??

Well..You have to land sometime..........Seriuosly, just as an advice, I`ve had a number of MiG`s over the years, they all fly great, but especially at a higher wingloading , they trend to be a little tricky on high AOA. The wing-fences helps considerally, just as intended on the full-size. - But then again, guess you are aware of all that....

Herb, it was a PM message actually, where to send is if you do not get it.
CG is according to instruction, proto few with almost no trim at all. Maybe a little tad up, caused by end of the fuse covering the thrust tube. My one has been modified so outlet was free.
Throws were +/- 6mm and it was more than enough. I started with lousy 450W upgrading to 750W later. Your steroid-o-Mig should fly out of your hand, proto got to 2250g.... I use bungee all the time. Dont be nervous about decals only czechs would know

Bob, the 3200's will slide in for sure. But then you have to find a way to secure them so they don't move, and yet come out easily.

I had to dremel out some more wood to get the pack to fit, it needed to slide further out to the fron to get the CG right:

The Jeti controller with 10 degree fixed timing was not the best choice for the Hacker B50, I swapped it out for a Kontronic 70A 3SL opto. Watts decreased from 1400 to 1300, which is good (part of it is just better efficiency due to the less agressive timing of the Kontronic esc).

Also pic of receiver and antenna installation added.

To get the CG right controller is moved way up front (as far as it will go) :

Nice Herb, you redid decals too. If Oliver sent you the decals again you may want to wait with numerals. People here use surplus numerals on Alfa Mig sheets. Its about the right size and very thin.
Can you please post a view through the ducting? Particulary the trust tube? Does the top part of the fuse get to the air stream a little bit? You may want to modify that....... With power you pump in it, it may tuck under full power. Good luck on maiden.

Hello Marek,

I did dremel out and smooth/flatten a bit of the top fuse appendix where it overhangs the thrust tube, I think it should be ok. I also closed the gap with some transparent tape.

Herb,

you think of everything I'm little bit worried of landings on the dirt strip. It looks strange but this one lands on the last 10 inches of belly. Are you planning to stick a heavy packing tape there?

Can`t recall any black striping in the color-cheme you are using - I belive you are talking about the black Wing-walker panels, they should be placed at the front part of wing-root butt against a separation panel at the wing-root. Front edge angeled opposite of wing sweep angle. Hope this clarify some.

Jindra, Yes there will be lots of tape on the fuse bottom (I even thought of three tiny wheels for maiden, but I don't think I have the right size).

I was hoping for rain so there would be some California grass to slide off, but no luck yet ...

Well I had the maiden today and all went well

I installed (with silicone) two triangular balsa strips on the fuse bottom to avoid excessive belly scraping, loaded the batt, advanced the throttle to 1300+ Watts and off she went straight as an arrow ...

It bareley needed any trim, just a tad of down. But the elevator (+-7mm) was way too sensitive, so it will be reduced next flight. It picks up speed very nicely already at quarter throttle ... After the usual mig wobble in the last turn before the landing approach it did glide for quite a loong while, this thing (like my other migs) has no drag to speak of.

The midi runs as smooth as silk, with no annoying resonances either - a true turbine sound they said (well ok maybe they did not know what a real model turbine sounds) ...

All in all a great model

I was at the field today and that Mig is a real beauty! The glasswork is very nicely done including the ducting. Herb did a great job on it. I got to see it takeoff on its belly, on dirt! Herbs not kidding about the elevator, it had lifted off about 4ft high and it instantly went 90 degrees verticle when he pulled up! I expected to see a typical stall and crash but it just kept accelerating up til He was quickly able to level it out.(can you say power?!)Tons of power!(pounds anyway)

Seeems like a very nice flier, I really did not do much myself besides the paint ... More flights next weekend, with more reasonable reduced elevator throw, airbrakes and parachute .

Bob, a transparent canopy would be nice, so you can keep an eye on the receiver . Ok thanks send me one ... Actually the K&A MiG-15 canopy almost fits. Yes it's the 18S.

Jindra you don't happen to have a hi-res image of the cssr numbers you can mail me so I can use to make the monokote serials? The one I have (from a decal set) is poor quality and does not enlarge well (blurred).

Are the control surfaces live hinged?
I decided to go with a Kontronik 600-17 for power.
It will provide plenty of go power!

I have even considered painting it like the Stoli Mig which I think is actually a 17.

I just saw Bill Reesman in the Red Bull Mig at the Nellis Airshow last month, sweet performance that was. I got some brief video of his night show from across town, he has some sort of giant sparklers that leave a 1000 foot trail for sparks and he drops exploding type colored fireworks as well, really neat. I could see it from where I'm at, south of the strip, Nellis is about 20 miles away from here.

I wonder if he still has his Yak 50, that was a neat airplane.

Steve C and Mark T flew a very nice pair of Steve Toschi designed (now kitted by K&A) Stoli MiG-15's a few years ago. Yes the original was a 17, but it's still a cool scheme .

It was Steve Tosci (sp?) who designed the original I believe. He and Steve C put in unheard of gobs of power and making 150mph+ passes.

should not be a problem to make your own. This cammo has been flown on 3 different airplanes 3214, 3233 and 3234. I have no decal sheets at home, but you may try to trace numbers on

Tomorrow I can ask friends to make a scan for you. Maybe someone in States can do that right away for you. Alfa Migs are quite popular there.
What rates you fly your one? I needed 7mm up to slow it down a bit for the landing. 135 g/dm^2 is quite a high loading

I flew it again yesterday, and maybe again later today. I have decreased the rates a bit but not by much, I am around 6mm on the elev. I also definitely needed about 1mm up trim, I might try moving the CG back a bit.

The wingloading (32 oz/ft2) actually feels very low, I am used to occasionally much higher wingloadings. To me it flies like a glider ... It does take a good circuit to slow down, part of it is low drag, and part of it is actually low wingloading (I did quite a bit of "gliding" yesterday, now I switched to my 3-rd controller, a Hacker Master 77A esc). I guess everything is relative.

I've had jets (eg jepe pyranha) that when you turn the power off they come down like a brick, very good for spot landings. The MiG is certainly not like that.

I know it glides forever. I like clasic jets, they fly on wings not on the power (it's stil nice to have). 1mm up hmmm, check how she flies on her back. Does she climb? I fly elevator almost neutral. Shallow dive in in both cases and hold her on the stick. Just personal prefference.
Yep Piranha does not really glide, but it's different style. Mig is far more agile then the little fish. Glad you can go on with details...

I flew it again yesterday, and maybe again later today. I have decreased the rates a bit but not by much, I am around 6mm on the elev. I also definitely needed about 1mm up trim, I might try moving the CG back a bit.

The wingloading (32 oz/ft2) actually feels very low, I am used to occasionally much higher wingloadings. To me it flies like a glider ... It does take a good circuit to slow down, part of it is low drag, and part of it is actually low wingloading (I did quite a bit of "gliding" yesterday, now I switched to my 3-rd controller, a Hacker Master 77A esc). I guess everything is relative.

I've had jets (eg jepe pyranha) that when you turn the power off they come down like a brick, very good for spot landings. The MiG is certainly not like that.

He kept the magic smoke inside but that ESC was getting too hot running at less than WOT. Herb flew it again late today, I'd say hes got it trimmed out quite well. I still can't get over it taking off from dirt on its belly!

Jindra, I haven't moved the CG around yet, as I flew every time with a different controller & controller location . I did get the decals today though!! Thanks Oliver.

Bob, the white smoke was out of my 3-yr old Mega 30 in the Focke-Wulf Ta-152 at the end of a 6 min turn and burn flight (even caught it on video), I did not know at the time that the Mega winding epoxy vaporizes to a dense white smoke, the effect is kind of cool though .

The (four year old) Kontronic 3SL 70A controller works very well with the Hacker, but does not like reduced throttle, and therefore gets really hot. This is not unusual for older brushless controllers. I had five or six thermal shutdowns on the second flight, very good for testing extended glide properties .

The third flight of the MiG-15 yesterday was with a Hacker 77A Master and the flight went flawlessly. This time the controller barely got warm. It takes off no problem from dirt, I have two balsa triangular shaped rails glued on with silicone to the bottom, so the nice fg does not get scraped on takeoff or landing. On wet Ohio grass, you would just slide on the belly.

I did a few moderately fast passes yesterday, I think I exceeded the speed limit of 150 km/h by 60 km/h ... With the motor off it's got that nice whistling sound of a molded airframe.

Demetrius I don't think flaps are necessary once you get used to a long glide approach. Maybe spoilerons. As I said it glides around very nicely, at least with my (relatively lightweight) setup. All in all a lovely plane, and a good relaxing no-frills weekend flier.

Thanks for the updates Herb. I will use a Kontronik Fun 600-17 with a Jazz 55 controller on 6s. The motor was on sale at Tower for $139.00 and free shipping, it came today. The bearing plates now have large cooling slots. The Jazz controller handles partial throttle settings very well and features a switch BEC. I have used this controller in the Pyranha with great success!
I'm hoping my kit will arrive before Christmas.

They are available, the information is in this thread. But there is a waiting list, since the supply is low compared to demand.
So the safest and quickest way to get hold of one is to put yourself on the list. You will be contacted ASA the next batch is available and you can decide than, if you take it.
That is how the others in this thread did it. Current waiting time is about two months. Once its freely available, we will put the MIG on our new website to be launched soon.
Two american dealers, ductedfann and Dynamoelectrics ordered a couple and will get one each soon. If you are lucky, you may get hold of one of these.

I would be glad if the manufacturer would deliver more, but that is the current situation. At least I can tell, that the quality is well worth waiting.

I'd like to hear what kind of power you'll get with that setup. I just ran up my 600-15 in a Midi on 6S (two TP 3S2P 4200 PL's in series) and got about 850 watts under 50 amps. I'll try it with my 3S3P 6000 PL's and PQ 3700 20's. In a pre-production Air Power fan I got over 1kw on 5S with the 600-17. I'll be making a stand to hold fans on the scale to measure thrust soon so I'll be able to see how much thrust I'm actually getting. Now I'll even be able to run up a 22/30/3 with 8 or 9S.

I have also the FUN 600-15 in my Mig-15, it's working ok.

@ Demetrius,

you don't need flaps for the Mig,like Herb told you. (the field I am going to to fly my Mig, has the size of a carrier!)

Looking forward to flying this one alot.
I really like the fact that the wing and stabs are removeable.

Dynamo Electrics has it listed on their site, not yet available but the specs are listed as such:

I am not familiar with this motor, Astro claims on their site it will work on 6s at ca. 1400 Watts in the Midi, which should work .

The question is how long the $130 motor will last at these (or even significantly lower) power levels, as I said I have no experience.

I'm quite sure there's a lot of tape or another layer of glass to protect it, too nice of a plane to get it all scratched up. I do like that take off though, no tossing or bungee.

Jon's cell phone went off twice while he was recording, the second time he even managed to answer it . That part was edited out for obvious reasons, entertaining as it might have been ...

If that wasn't enough, the sound you hear halfway through the recording is a Costa Mesa police helicopter hovering over the field (speed limit? ).

That swept wing looks great in flight Herb.
. I contacted Oliver and he confirmed this. Other than photos graphs of the various stages of construction I did not see any written instructions on the CD. The production kits to not come with ANY hardware. The manufacturer decided to leave this up to the builder.
If you could list the throws and any expo settings and of course the CG that would be great.

My kit did not contain much hardware either, but I don't mind (the Aeronaut kits don't contain much hardware either). Most people prefer to use their own stuff (eg ball links) so that was fine with me. Yes there's no text, but I thought the pictures were pretty good and self-explanatory.

* I provided my own aileron linkages (see photos) using ball links from my LHS.

* I used their elevator ball links, but had to use a thinner steel wire

* I did not solder the wire together (yes it can be done, but going in there with a soldering iron ), I used plenty of epoxy instead, pretty foolproof I think.

* Mine came with all the wing joiners, and the steel pins to hinge the fuse bottom.

* I mounted the fan differently (siliconed) because I don't like all that resonating noise of the fuselage acting like a violin case. No harware needed there, at least for my installation.

* I cut & glued a piece of liteply for the rec. batt and receiver in the nose.

I use ailerons +- 7mm, elevator +-6mm , expo -20%. CG at 166mm.

The MiG-15 is still a bit pitch sensitive, I need to reduce the elevator rate a bit more. Roll rate is fine though.

The CG on mine is at 166mm, as stated in the instructions (it's actually a picture). Mine's a bit noseheavy, so will have to move something back a bit.

I'm glad the video came out alright. I'm not experienced with videography, photography is more my forte, so that was a bit of a baptism of fire! Herb's MIG is very fast and the sun was in just the wrong place, so I kept getting dazzled whenever Herb flew to the left of me.

As I said, a Kokam 3200/3900 6S (3S+3S) will fit in the battery opening. Other sized packs might or might not fit (you have to look up the dimensions, and compare to the Kokam pack).

What do you need a paperweight B50-XL for ?? Mine weighs 63 oz with the B50-18S and does not need much power to go .

I had to replace one Kokam cell in one of the two 3S packs, it had sprung a leak on the last flight (aborted at ca. 1/3 capacity left I later found out) and had spewed a bit of that sweet smelling electrolyte inside the shrink wrap. Took a whole evening to re-balance the 3S pack with a new cell, re-stress-tested the new pack & new solder joints, 1420W hot off the charger . Aah the pleasures of Monday LiPo battery maintenance ...

Serious question Herb - what is your typical flight profile like? Full power is how long a burst, how long in between at what approximate power setting? 70 amps and 1,400 watts should qualify for BOTH Hacker abuse AND Kokam abuse .

You can see the flight profile in the video, full throttle is only needed in short burst. Hacker B50 motor is three years old (was in the JePe A-4 I sold). As you can also see from the video, all the Kokams 3200's HD have temp monitors on them, they barely reach 50 deg Celsius at the end of the flight (Kokam have been run to 80+C with apparently no adverse effects ).

The Kokam cell in question was one year old (jan 05) and the leak was at - or very close to - the tab, unfortunately the older tabs & pcb connectors are a bit thin for a full 20C (64A) load. The tabs can get quite hot if conditions are right:

Just so as to avoid possible misunderstandings, this particular MiG-15 is very light, and will fly very well already on 600-700 Watts!!! My setup is just one of many possible (see comments below).

That the MiG-15 is very light is clearly seen from Atindra's videos (he flies it on a Mega 20/xx), and from the smooth glide on mine (right Bob?).

There are a number of reasons why I went with the specific setup: I standardized batteries over a year ago (I only own & use multiples of 3S ) and motors (Hacker B50-18S) so that both motors and batts are interchangable (ie, if I smoke a motor in the Rafale, which luckily has not happened yet).

Ok, so having said that, I think an ideal setup for the MiG-15 might be a Kokam 3200HD (or similar) 4S pack combined with a motor delivering ca. 700-800 Watts. That would shave off another 160g=5.6oz, and bring the weight down to a ridicoluous 57 oz (1.62kg). This is exactly the kind of setup that Ulf Herder used in his SOD ("Scrape Off the Dirt" ) Aeronaut Panther, and it still delivers a respectable 200W/lbs.

You have also to keep in mind that if you add too much weight, the wings will fly off, it's not a question of if, only when . That's one further reason I tend avoid wild areobatics on these kind of birds, wings coming off are not a pretty sight, esp. when there are bystanders.

One more note, these 3S packs have all comparable dimensions, and so I think will fit in width/height (lenght is not much of an issue) in the MiG-15:

Kokam 3200 131x43x23mm 240g

PQ 3700XP 130x44x21mm 255g

Tanic 3650 135x44x21mm 273g

XCell 3900 134x43.5x21mm 276g

Above dimensions and weights are without shrinkwrap, cables etc.

Looking at the data above you can see all four are very close in size and weight.

OK my Mig is just about ready. I hope to fly it on Sunday.
Having looked carefully at the other set-ups I chose to go a different route with the battery location. Instead I cut a new hatch around the cockpit area and as you can see by the pic I think it looks like it was meant to be like this. In fact I would recommend this to anyone contemplating the model. I have used a 6S2P battery of the Hyperion LiteStorm CL2100ís (Thunder Power 2100ís).
The CG is smack on 170mm with this layout. Looking at Herbs comments I think this will be OK.
I am using the Kontronik 600-17 and static load is 57A @ 21.3V = 1214W. This drops back to around 1150W. I think in the air it will drop to around 1050W. I will check this with the Watts Up meter.

I had planned on inserting my Packs(Kokam 3200's through the canopy opening but will have to take a closer look now.

Hi Herb, i am not sure what's vinyl tape, Is it red duct tape or similar to duct tape? Where did you get it?
Also, what's in the gap between the hacker and the fan? The blue substance?
