It doesn't look like there's much for kits out there. Any good plans? Or perhaps a mod/kit-bash? I'd love to do some RC rocket/boost gliders.

I would just convert a topsky mini. I think they are $140 with 2 servos. Would be a bunch of fun on D7s and E6 motors.

The DLG? Looks nice. Are they hard to pilot at launch? If you put the motor near CG, does the exhaust harm the tail? Looks like the rudder is above and below the wing line.

I'm a bit of a noob here, getting decent at flying a trainer around, but not sure I'm ready for the speed of a rocket launch unless it's mostly self-guiding for the boost.

Yes, the DLG. Many modern RC rocket gliders use DLG designs/build techniques as a jumping off point.

You would probably not use the vertical tail that comes with the mini topsky ARF but come up with your own vertical.

Don't try to do a RCRG until you are good at regular gliders. DLGs are a great training tool.

Well, maybe the way to go is get the mini topsky and use it as a DLG for a while. Get used to things and think about how to handle the motor.

It looks like the Raven puts the vertical on the tail on the bottom and the motor on top. That seems reasonable..

Most American performance RC rocket gliders have the motor on top somewhere near or ahead of the CG. Tail goes upside down.

You will also need to build a launch tower. This is an awesome set of plans:

Would you go with rudder/elevator or aileron/rudder/elevator? Rocket motor on top or bottom?

Thy won't add a huge amount of benefit and there is a risk of flutter. If this is your first RCRG stay simple.

Well good for you. Ryans' answers were for ttabbal, by his own admission a noob at the trainer stage. His advice to avoid the added complexity is sound in such cases, although I've seen exceptions. I myself was not one of them, thats how I know.
