This is my first foray into R/C rocket gliders. My daughter Leah helps me build and fly a simple single-channel design, the Arcie II: http://edmondsaerospace.com/RC.html . The whole thing is a lot more stable and repeatable than my original expectation of rocket power. We have one successful flight so far, and going again tomorrow morning.

Leah seems to be contemplating upcoming flights.

Rocket powered Kyosho Illusion

Here's mine - its an old beat up EDF model that is getting a second life. Glides like a brick but at least it looks good doing it Estes D-12 powered, 14 oz. lift-off weight.

Cool conversion Jim! I wonder where you fly. Here in the Bay Area, launch sites are hard to come buy. This morning we get one launch in, and then firemen show up and tell us that we can't do it, apparently nowhere in the city.

ArI,

California has some strict fire regs with regards to rocketry. Bit there is a good rocket club in your area. Search on lunar.

I'm in Thousand Oaks and the empty lot you can see in the video is school district property. 99% of the time we fly R/C electric aircraft there but there's also the rare rocket which the school district doesn't seem to mind. We only fly the low power Estes motors there since its not all that big of an area.

Lunar has an excellent launch facility, but they launch once a month. It's a very long interval for a 2.5-year-old to wait for :=)

@Jim: thank you for sharing your experience. Around here we fly electric R/C in city parks, and one of them (RSA) specifically prohibits rockets, the other (Baylands) I think implicitly frowns on them.

Got in two flights today, a perfect maiden of my 6 foot tall Interceptor RC BG on a G-12, really docile easy boost to around 700-800 feet and an incredibly slow glide to landing. No stall, just a gentle wing rock and easy flare right at myself. also flew my 6 foot tall X-15, now painted, on a G-40, perfect motor, nice flame and sound, perfectly hands off straight up boost, push over into glide and flare, nice day.

Enjoy

Here's the interceptor video. I bumped the elevator as I dropped the launch controller after it lifts off so it makes a little pitch over but then was hands off...

Here are some stills from my 78" long bomarc, maiden today. G-40 and G-33 flights....It was a bit windy and the model was gettiing blown side to side and the rail buttons were binding, eventually it calmed enough to get good flights. I overflared a bit on the second landing, but no damage.

Frank,

Have you tried a KF foil to improve glide on any of your creations?

Richard
PS; use to look down on profile planes but I love your creations.

Richard, thanks very much. I've done a KF on the larger Interceptor. I've also used it on an F-117 and a B-2 I did. I never did a before and after test, so I don't know how much difference it made, but it did help stiffen the wings and the glide and stall characteristics were quite good, especially on the B-2 and Intereceptor.

Frank, I really liking your projects and videos. Keep em coming. How about a spaceshuttle with tanks that detach and where the shuttle glides back down? Have anything like that? Have you seen that BBB TopGear episode where they make a car look like the shuttle and have drop tanks. They made it RC, but the tanks didn't detach and it crashed into a fireball. Make something along those lines, but way much smaller and out of depron. How about it?
