Tower Hobbies Turbo Vee, any good?

I was going to 'hop up' my reef racer 1 but decided against it (too small to fit a 7 cell in it). I am thinking about buying a Tower Hobbies Turbo Vee instead. The reason I chose it over the hammer ep is because it is 4" shorter and 1" narrower. Both use the same water cooled 550 motor and will take a 7 cell battery but being smaller than the hammer it should be a little faster. Does anyone have one of these to let me know if it is any good or not? The price is really good right now, $79.99 including the tx. I will have to buy all the batteries. Thanks for any advice.

I have one and it is like you say very similar to the hammer. It is as good as the hammer, the tx does not have dual rates though. I think it is a slight faster and has vertical trim tabs as well. I however chose the hammer to stick with because I am set-up with all 8 cell batts and cannot fit 8 in the turbo vee. You can't go wrong w/ either one really. Both are quite a bit more boat than the reef racer.

ps thanks for taking care of the paypal..

I was thinking of doing the same thing (Hammer, 8 cell) but the tech at AC said it would burn out the esc. You haven't had any trouble running it like that? I have heard the Turbo Vee is between 15 to 20 mph. (with a 7 cell). Is that right?

No prob. with PayPal, it was the P.O.'s fault, not yours.

I have been using with 8 generic cells for about a year. No problems, all else is stock.
I did run it on 12 on the bench, but I like 8 cells flat in the bottom.

That sounds about right 20 mph on 7 cells.

20 mph on 7 cells sounds good. Glad to hear it's holding up with 8 cells. Thanks for the help.

I ordered the Turbo Vee and 2-7 cell 1900mAH packs should be here Saturday! I was looking at the parts break down on it and it uses the same props and drive shaft as the Reef Racer. Makes me think it is made by Aqua Craft.

I have the Turbo Vee , it's made by Hobbico the same that make the AquaCraft Hammer EP. It's a fun boat out of box, gets on plane very fast.
It's not a race boat! just a good fun sport boat. Very well made and looks good. Not every one want's to race.
On sale for $79.99.

That's what I want, a well made boat that is fairly fast from the start but can be upgraded later if I choose. I'm hopping it will handle choppy water okay. That is where I ordered from, thanks for the add though.

I've had the TV since Saturday now and it' a great little boat. Not quite as fast as I expected but still very happy with it. Very snappy at the hit of the throttle. It acts like it wants to jump out of the water (lol). Also with a fresh battery you can spin the tail around so hard it will leave the water. I am very happy with if any one else is thinking of getting one it is well worth the $79.99 but a 7 cell is a must to make it perform.

Depends on the prop, but a stock 550 could draw up to 20A, more with 8 cells.

Not sure if this makes any difference but the turbo vee has a 540 motor not a 550. (Or I should say the turbo vee 2)

If the add in the latest catalog from TH is correct it is listed as a 540 motor.
