The only thing i never liked about the kits was the 1mm screws. I have searched everywhere and still don't have a 1mm drill bit. Maybe consider up sizing the screws to a 1.5 mm screw so they would go in very snug with a 1/16 american drill bit.

Oh yeah, that's rather annoying. It's rather strange though, GWS' planes are fully available in America, but in European countries they're hard to get.. Like Holland. We do use metric...

Anyhow. Would a Speed 400 DD work in a GWS Warbird, like the Spitty? I got a 2 cell 1500 mA pack, which doesn't weigh a lot and could compensate with the heavy motor.

Motor/Gearbox - GWS EPS-400C-DS BALL BEARING MOTOR/GEARBOX D GEAR
Prop - APC 10 X 7 SLOW FLYER PROPELLER
Battery - GWS 11.1 VOLT 1300 MAH LIPOLY BATTERY PACK
Speed Controller - CASTLE CREATIONS PIXIE 20P BRUSHED SPEED CONTROL
The propeller seems a little to heavy to 3 cells Li-Po.

I like to suggest you to replace a GWS EP9050HD.

The propeller can try to use a GWS EP7035 for 2 cells.

However, the larger nose WW-II like Zero, F4U... are not be recommanced for 400DD.

Sorry about the delay in replying to your query, I surf mostly over lunch!
The brushless I used from RCM Direct is a little outrunner. They mention a gearbox in their literature/website, but its hard to see how you would fit one. Anyway, mine's fine as a direct drive with the orange 8060 prop on 2 LiPos. It draws 10A static, and will climb very steeply, but not vertically. 3 LiPos would make it awesome, but I'll stick with 2 as this gives adequate scale performance, around 15 minutes flight time, and is under stressing everything.
Although it was supplied with a GWS adaptor, it wasn't a direct bolt on replacement for the kit motor - I had to saw off some of the wooden "stick". All-up weight is 15oz (about 450g)

You should be able to find something like this:
http://www.houseoftools.com/product.htm?pid=58002

If I'm remembering right that there are 25.4mm to an inch, the 0.039 bit is pretty well 1mm.

TrevC I tried to PM you, but I can't. I'm currently seriously considering a GWS P40 with my Speed 400 plus Direct Drive. Would it fit, or not? I really haven't seen a GWS Warbird up close, so I can't decide for myself if I could fit this motor. Sorry to ask again, but no one's given me a usuable answer (about this motor, that is).

Not sure if you're asking whether the 400 DD will fit or the brushless I'm using. The brushless with the supplied adaptor should fit, it's quite a small diameter. Bear in mind this is an outrunner, so you'll need some clearance around the spinning can.
I wouldn't recommend a DD 400 - we tried this in my son's Formosa after the kit 370 fried on 8 cells, and performance was very disappointing. It was much better when we fitted the GWS geared 400 with the D gearing. This power unit only costs £10 in the UK.
Is the P40 out yet? If not, I can recommend the F4U - big wing for most forgiving flying performance, big cowling for installing motors, gearboxes etc.

I just upgraded my Zero from a 370 to 400, kept the same 9x7 prop, C gearing and 2S 1500 LiPo.
It flies a lot faster and powers through wind better, but lost most of its aerobatic abilities due to the added weight.
