Newbie Alert

Hi guys, I have been reading through this thread for the past couple of weeks. Thank you for all the great information!

I am a complete newbie to RC flying, but am having a great time so far.

I have the stock Stryker and P51 from Parkzone. I bought a stryker fuse to soup it up after i began reading this thread.

I hope you don't mind the beginner questions, but i am starting from square one.

I also have a DraganFlyer 4 prop heli that i play around with, and have the futaba controler that came with that. They sell a "flight pack" at rctoys.com that suposedly works with this controller. Here is the list of things included in the flight pack :
http://parts.rctoys.com/rc-toys-hobbies/Items/400070%20-%20(S)?
"INCLUDES:

One R127DF 7 CH FM Dual Conversion Receiver
Four S3004 Ball Bearing Servo
Futaba NR4QB Receiver NiCd Square 4.8V 600mAh J
One Switch Harness with charging plug
One 9" Servo Extension Wire
One Set of Servo Accessories for all servos "

Do you think it's possible to use this pack in the stryker upgrade, or should i just buy servos and such somewher else that would work with this Futaba?

I don't completely understand the items you talk about, here's a list of things which seem to come up in a lot of your upgrades:
MEGA 16/15/4 brushless
Jeti 30 amp ESC
3S1P Flightpower 2500 mah Lipo
Graupner CAM 5.5 X 4.3 prop
Pro Film or Paint

Where can i order these items from, or would you suggest something else to start out? I am in Canada, but don't mind ordering from the USA.

I have been flying the Stryker for around 2 months now, with no major accidents. I am completely self-taught. I definately need some more speed out of this baby! I just don't know the components required to build this stryker.

Sorry for the long post! I got a little carried away

Cheers,
Andre.

Graupner CAM 5.5 X 4.3 prop or APC 6 x 4e
Pro Film or Paint stick to the paint - no reason to use film if you use the wing stickers or tape.
How about the servos? I like Hitec HS-81MG for strength (metal gears) or just HS55 for lightness

Andre:

Welcome to the addiction. I have added some alternatives to the items above you may want to consider. There are many internet shops that will sell you most of what you want.

AirCraft World in Japan http://www.aircraft-world.com/ ships internationally for $2.50 USD and they would have most of what you listed or the equivalent. Shipping to CA takes about 5 days.

Several other places that I like are: (not sure they ship internationally however)

Bishop Power Products: http://www.b-p-p.com/
AlleRC: http://www.edogfight.com/Catalog_page/home.htm
e-flightline : http://www.e-flightline.com/
Park Flyer Motors : http://www.parkflyermotors.com/

I am sure others can add to the list and suggest shops in Canada. You might do well to check the prices including taxes and shipping before ordering. AirCraft World's prices initally look high, but when you add in sales taxes and "shipping and handeling", most of the time you come out ahead buying from them. One time I purchased a Razor brushelss motor from them that was cheaper than I could by it direct from the maker, and he is only about 200 miles from me!

Addiction started

Hi Foamcrusher,

Thank you for the reply, I am enjoying the addiction so far!

One thing i am a little unclear about is if i should purchase that "flight package" from RcToys. I have the cheaper Futaba controler for my heli, which i would like to use with the new stryker if possible. It comes with the following components:

http://parts.rctoys.com/rc-toys-hobbies/Items/400070%20-%20(S)?
"One R127DF 7 CH FM Dual Conversion Receiver
Four S3004 Ball Bearing Servo
Futaba NR4QB Receiver NiCd Square 4.8V 600mAh J
One Switch Harness with charging plug
One 9" Servo Extension Wire
One Set of Servo Accessories for all servos ""

Would those servos work in the Stryker? If i do not purchase that package, what will i need to use the servos and such to use the Futaba controller i have already? (pardon my ignorance, but i have only flown parkzone pre-made stuff)

Any tips on paint? What kind, and should i get an airbrush?

Thanks for your help!

Andre.

Andre:

I think you will be $ ahead to buy just what you need and know from the experience of others that works. That package has more than you need.

For example:
The Stryker only needs a 4-channel Rx. The 7-channel will work, but it is physically larger and heavier, and you will save $ by buying a good 4-channel Rx, like a Berg DSP-4 or an FMA Direct M5. You don't need the NiCd Rx pack since the ESC (both Jeti and CC) have a Battery Eliminator Circuit (BEC) that will run the Rx and servos from your motor pack. One 9" servo ext. is not much use - you will need two 6" extensions to get most servos to work on the Stryker. Your Stryker only needs two servos, not four, and without cross referencing the ones in the package, it is hard to tell if they are too big or too small.

Do the research and I think you will be ahead to buy what works.

Trilogy,

There are a number of good online RC hobby stores in Canada. Here are the one's I've discovered. I've ordered from a few of them and they've all been positive experiences.

http://www.backyardflying.com/
http://www.flyhighhobbies.com/
http://www.smoothair.ca/
http://www.greathobbies.com/
http://www.oilmanelectricrc.com/
http://www.zebrahobby.ca/
http://www.hobbystuff.ca/
http://www.ajhobby.com/
http://www.rctoys.com/

Where in Canada are you in? If you're in the Toronto area there are a couple of good local hobby shops.

What battery pack are you running with that setup? I was thinking of running 2 TP 1320 packs in par so I can use them separately for other planes. One can go broke buying single purpose packs for every project.
I am running a 3s TP 2100. You should be fine with a 3s2p 1320's (2640's) but if you plan to run them together, it might not be such a good idea to use them separately much anymore. They can get out of balance and raise Cain in your Stryker. If you can do it, get a TP 2100. If not, and you can rebalance your cells, do it often.

Foamcrusher:
Thanks for the advice. Here is the list of things i will try and get from the hobby shops which will get me started on the new stryker:
MEGA 16/15/4 brushless
Castle Creations Phoenix 35
3S1P Flightpower 2500 mah Lipo or Thunder Power 3S1P 2100 mAh narrow cells
APC 6 x 4e
(2)Hitec HS-81MG
Berg DSP-4
two 6" extensions for servos
Standard ailerons and hatch
(I have the fuse already)
I guess i will need a crystal to match my transmitter?
Standard motor mount
Think of anything else i will need?
Would you recommend putting some rods inside to strenghten the stryker?

Thanks for taking the time to get me started! It's really appreciated.

LLoo:
Thanks for the canadian recommendations. I am near Vancouver BC.

Cheers,
Andre.

Trilogy,
A carbon fibre rod through the middle of the fuse. will make your motor mount much much stronger. If you're new to RC flying I'd higly recommend this mod. My first fuse. did not have the CF tube, my motor mount broke off more times that I care to remember. My new fuse has the CF installed and I haven't had any problems with it since. BTW you can get CF tubes from Walmart. Look for arrows in their sports section, they range in price from 4-8 bucks.

Hey trilogy, where do you fly? I live in White Rock and have two remains of strykers, totally stocks tho. There is school yard nearby big enough where all my ( and my kid's) flying take place. For all my supplies I go to "RC pitstop", its in Langley and they usually carry all Parkzone stuff and parts for them. I think they still carry at least one bare fuselage that I saw two days ago.

Flying..

LLoo: Thanks for the tip on the CF rod, i'll definately put that in. A friend of mine broke off the motor mount of the stock plane! Any advice on how to put in the rod? Just stick it in there, or do you heat it first..

Chainick:
I live in Abbotsford, but work in Ladner. I drive right by White rock most days on my way home! My father in law owns a company in Abbotsford which has a large back field which is completely unused. It makes a perfect flying field! So I have the opportunity of learning there. Works great. I've been to RC Pit stop, great place. I also use a local place in Abbotsford called One Stop Hobbies. I picked up a bare fuse there (and bought the parkzone stock stuff)

Cheers,
Andre.

Thanks for the advice MTwallet, I guess Ill bite the bullet and get the TP2100. I see a lot of people are using them with good results in the stryker.

I went back to the beginning of this thread(part 1) again and it is amazing how a plane like the Stryker can evolve with all the good input from people, successes and failures. This is what makes this hobby KICK BUT!!!

Thanks

Well, the stryker is almost done! So, what prop do I use? I've got a 16/15/3 with a 3S2P 5400mah pack, and I have a 45 amp esc. Hmm... 5x5? 6x4? 6x5.5? Aim is about 43 amps. You guys should be using aluminum clamshell mounts! Stop using those tiny plastic things that arent designed for so much power! Ok, I'll post a teaser picture of just the mount...
