It's alive!! It's ALIVE!! It's a ...Cutie!!

Well, it's 2:40 A.M. and my Cutie is finally finished! I just did the final control hookups and checks and ran the motor-GB on low power for several minutes to get everything mated up and running smooth. I installed the prop and fired it up again and man does this thing have tons of power. Feels like double the power of the 480 on my T-52!! With luck and no wind her maiden flight will be tomorrow. For the first time ever i will have twoplanes to carry to the field. Covering could have been neater but it's not to bad for my first time I don't think. I used the same color scheme as Gerald with blue fuse and the rest in yellow. Thanks Gerald!!
Seems a tad nose heavy but I will play around with that in the morning and I figure a little nose heavy is OK for 1st flight anyway. I am really impressed with this kit, everything fit perfectly and it all worked just like the instructions said even the control rods were perfect and worked the first time without adjustment! That is almost unbelievable from my past experience! I hadter go to bed now I have to be up in 5 hours.

I am pretty happy with this covering considering that it was my first attempt. Still have a lot to learn though.

Hey, looks great! I was planning on doing my Cutie in the same colors as Gerald too, but I changed my mind. You'll be extremely happy with the Cutie. There is no modifications or tips that come to my mind...Larry that good of a job on this plane. Just Go Fly! (If it's not to windy). I've handled it in up to 7mph winds, and she does just fine. One tip I just thought of; keep it a little fast on landing. My first few flights I almost stalled it on approach. If at all possible, make it a straight in approach as well. Well, good luck, let us know how it goes.

Great looking Cutie, and what a lovely setting! Is that your back yard? If so, I'm envious. Looks like you could just take right off from that table and fly around.

Neil, yes it is nice out here. That is actually a pasture of aprox. 17 acres. I can stand on the deck in the mornings and toss. VERY nice!

Well I went to the field this afternoon winds were about 2-5 mph from the east and southeast. First flight I gave the TX to a friend by the name of Linsy who was there giving his glow Astrohog it's maiden flight. He also had a Somethin Extra also in glow. I gave the Cutie a toss after a thorough checkout and it could barely go forward and no climb at all. It didn't sound like it was making power like it should. We shimmed the back edge of the wing about one sixteenth of aninch and it did a little better so we shimmed it to an eigth of an inch and I tried to put an 8X6 prop on but it would not fit the adapter so I put the 9X6 from SR back on again. This time with Linsy at the controls I tossed and the thing took off and made a steep climb out, it sounded like it had double the power of before. It flew great, Linsy trimmed it out and flew lasy circles to get the feel of it myself. Flew it twice more and it did great. had to add right trim and a tad of down trim as well. I landed and bent the gear. Fixed the gear and took off again. Flew for 5 minutes and landed hard again. Linsy took it back up for about 3 minutes and tried to give me some tips on landing. I new the battery had 8 minutes on it but it still had good power so I tossed it to try another landing. Big MISTAKE!!
Linsy tossed it for me into the breeze and I didn't have enough power to climb, I started going downwind to line up with the runway and kept feeding in more up elevator to stay in the air to the runway and as I turned to land I stalled from about 10 feet up. The plane hit the ground nose first with the prop spinning with the throttle as full as it would go The GB is toast, F1 is busted up pretty bad from the battery/sledgehammer and the mounting hole for the GB are stripped out. Have to call larry tomorrow for another motor/GB and get out the ca and epoxy.
Here is a pic of the carnage!

The F1 former is pretty mangled and some pieces are missing. Didn't see them at the crash site and the holes for the GB mount are stripped out. Is there anyway to repair this since I don't have all of the parts? Could I get some CA Debonder and get the rest of the old former out and replace it with a new one? If Icould get it out it should be simple to replace it by sliding another one in its place. Ideas? Experience? Prayers?
One thing is for sure I love this plane!! Makes the T-52 feel like a big old truck compared to a sports car!

Mike,

I just bought the Cutie... your scaring me.... I so excited to start flying the plane, at the same time terrified of smashing it to a small pile of rubble.

I'm used to flying the Zagi... a small nose dive it no nig deal. The cutie will be my 2nd plane, and 1st basa wood plane.

I am curious about one thing. Any particular reason why you prefer to hand launch vs. ROG?

cclap Don't be scared of this plane at all. The guy who was helping me is strictly glow and he was impressed with the ability of this plane. It handles wiind great and flies llike it is a cloud! The crash was all my fault, complete operator error. Combination of inexperience, lack of practice recently and trying to squeeze one more quick touch and go out of a battery pack with 7 minutes of its power already depleted. That last point is the one that caused the trouble. ssituatioon went south fast and I had no power to pull out of it. All my fault, plain and simple.
We were hand launching because we were flying at the end of a grass runway and the grass was to deep for ROG. It woud pull itself but not fast enough to take off in the tall grass.

Sorry to hear about your unfortunate crash Mike. Hey, good lookin' plane by-the-way.
I suggest that you just grind off the remains of the front light-ply former F1 flush with the sides of the motor area. Don't disturb the motor mounts. Then just make up a new piece based on the outline of the original part maybe by using the scrap that the part came from as a template. You'll need to omit the tabs on the sides then you can just glue this new piece in behind and against the original. The little protrusion at the top edge which indexes into the hatch cover will be too far back on the replacement so that will need to get cut off flush (when you're making the part). Then make a similar tab that scabs onto the front which will line up correctly with the hatch. If the motor mount pieces are damaged you can reinforce them by scabbing on a similar sized piece of ply underneath each. Do this right and it won't look bad either.
Does this make sense?

I agree with Gerald, i Too dionked my X250 in it's first few flights and pulled the gearbox up from the mounting holes and just CAed some light ply under the orriginal ones and it has worked great, Nice looking Cutie by the way.

Gerald & Dauntae, Thanks for the tips and compliments. I went back to the crash site and found some more of the pieces of the former. The only piece missing is half of the piece where the screw attaches for the hatch hook. I ordered the sheet of 1/8 ply that contains the F1 on monday and got it in the mail on Wednesday along qith the new GB. After looking things over and discovering how hard ply gets when a liberal amount of CA has been applied I decided against removing the old former. I was thinking of taking the top of the new former and cutting it off and trimming the original to accept it and then gluing the rest behind it. I was thinking of CA'ing a piece of ply across the top of the old motor mount would it matter whether it is over or under? The more I think about the easier the repair is going to be. I think that about an hours worth of work will get her back in the air now. What a plane! I'm still smiling from my Sundays flight

This thread is a good example of why this discussion stuff is so good. I have looked at the Cutie as well and have thought of giving one to my retired father since it seems foolproof (or close anyway).
Comment on the post-crash Picture: Most of my planes look worse than this before they crash.
I would like to hear your progress on flying this plane.

Flight ready once again!

The Cutie is repaired and ready for the weekend. The repair was extremely simple and took about an hour and fifteen minutes to do. I ordered the sheet with the 1/8 ply former from SR Batteries on Monday morning and got it and my GB on Wednesday. Thanks Larry! I simply glued all the pieces of the original that I had back into place, sanded the tabs off of my new F1, enlarged the notch where it slides over the end of the motor mount that protrudes into the battery compartment and just slipped it in and piggybacked it onto the original. Then it was just a matter of gluing and clamping. Then I put the pieces of ply under the motor mount rails. Lastly I trimmed the bottom of my hatch to accept the new former being further back. The screw for the holddown latch was long enough that it would still reach the original position. All done! How easy is that? My hatch isn't quite as easy to put on and off but a little more tweaking will take care of that. Now for my next project, Figuring out dual rates on my radio again. Now that is going to be a challenge!!!!
