Is the the GWS DX from the litestik as powerful as the DC1717?

I believe that the DX is more powerful. I have a chart that shows that the DX can draw 1.55 amps max, while the DC1717 can only draw -.95 amps max.

thanks for your response. What about the thrust? does the DX provide more thrust than the DC1717?

According to my chart, the DC1717 puts out a maximum thrust of 4.16 ounces with a 11.8 to 1 gear ratio, 10x4.7 prop, at 11 volts & 1.12 amps.

The DX-D with a 9.66 to 1 gear ratio, 12x6 prop, 1.55 amps & 8 volts puts out 5.54 ounces of thrust.

So, with a few more cells, it appears that the DC1717 comes close to the DX motor in terms of thrust.

I have experimented with 1524s, both 6:1 and 11:1 ratios, and with similar ratios on 1624s and also with the "A" GWS gear box using stock and carbon brushed replacement motors. I think the GWS will swing a larger prop than the 6:1 ratios of the Faulhaber motors without destroying the gearbox (don't ask how I found out). The 11:1 will swing the larger Braun prop with up to nine cells if you use the HMP-J9 ESC. With the GWS I use 8 cells (270ma NiMH) with an 8x6 prop and get lots of power--more than I could with the 6:1 Faulhabers with similar sized props and the gearbox lasts!

And for $10 ea. you can buy 5 of the carbon brush motors replacement motors for the price of one 1717, so there's the value.Slightly less efficient and and a wee bit heavier than the 1717, but in my case,I don't notice and I'm pleased with the life of the CB units, retiring one DXA cb motor after 13+ LOGGED hours of use with 7 cell NiMH and half of the time using a 3 cell 800MaH lithium (tadrian), with pauses in the pack run for cooling purposes.Also used 5 cell NiMH and 2 cell Tadrians.These little power units are fast becoming the workhorse of the backyard flyers, powering many new planes, both Arf and kit, using them. Hiya Rekit. I'm purchasing the motors ONLY (w/o the GB) for $10 ea from Balsa Products. That's www.balsapr.com Being a cheapskate, I'd LOVE to find them for less. They have a Grey endbell vs the black for the wiper brush motors.

Thanks for the quick response, I love the litestik and I would love to run it on 8 cells but I did not want to burn it up to quickly due to the price of the motor/gearbox
at my LHS.

A while back I did some testing with GWS props and the 1717.

My thrust test showed that the 11x4.7 gave me 25% more thrust and about 15% more effecient than the Braun carbon prop. When I mounted the 11x4.7 to the plane it barely staggered around the sky when the Braun pulled it straight up.

Every combination I tried I could always get more power out of the 1717. Tried a 1717 on a Pico Stik and had the same power as a DX-A with a 10x4.7 prop but 1/2 the amp draw.

The 1717 is a much lighter and effecient motor than the GWS drives. It will produce the same power but at a much lower current draw.

Only draw back is the price but I think it is worth it. Think of it as a high performace option part.

the recommended motor for the plane that I am building (Demoiselle from RC Microflight) is the DC1717 with a braun 9x5. So I think I going to use a DX-A with a 10x4.7, I should get more power for just few extra grams but $ 30 less!

Todd hit it on the head. I use both the DC1717 and the GWS motors. The DC1717 is a sweet little thing, small, light and strong. You have more options in mounting it and it work great with the CF props. Well worth the money.
The GWS motors are for fun, I love them. I cut the shaft down so I can use the ARC props from Anything. When you can build your own props with the pitch you want it make a new game of things. Most of the planes I have built lately are for the GWS motors, just to much fun to pass up for tinkering and designing.

I've read that the GWS motors get very hot when flown for a long time, i.e. with Lithium Metal batteries.

Bleriot, I think I read that you keep your flights to 15 minutes on purpose, so the GWS doesn't get too hot.

My question is, does the DC1717 motor also get really hot? Todd says it uses much less current, so I was thinking that maybe it doesn't build up so much heat.

Eventually I'd like to put Tadirans in my Demoiselle. If the GWS motors can't fly too long without overheating, then that negates my reason for getting Lithium Metal batteries in the first place.

Hi The reason I don't have a 1717 is that to maximize its wiper brush life, a JMP HF-9 ESC is strongly suggested by Todd. As I use 3 cell packs, this esc is not suited for my use as the cut off is 4.8V, and I don't like to time or guess at my duration. Should Mr Piednoir decide to make these ESC's w/ a cut out at 6+ V, or perhaps programmable between 4.8 or 6V then I would be first in line for both motor and ESC. I cannot answer your heat build up question from experience with the 1717, but surely someone with duration experience using this motor would have the answer WE seek. Maybe Mr Hansen or Mr Martin at Anything RC. Sorry. Best Regards
