Ikarus Yak-54 with PPS Build

Since there doesn't seem to be a lot of info yet on the Ikarus PPS
system (at least I haven't seen much) , I thought I would
share my first experience trying to build a "4D" plane using one.
I ordered mine through Ohio Model Products and bought the "Combo"
system which includes the brushless motor, the variable pitch unit, and
the prop blades. First off let me say I'm very impressed with the quality
of this combination. Everything fits with precision and it's fully
bearinged including thrust bearings on the pitch slider . Also it's
really neat the way the blade grips attach right to the hub on the front
of the motor. Here's a couple of pictures, front and back.

Now, getting to actually putting it into something, I chose the Ikarus
Yak-54. I always wanted one and it's also the plane pictured with the
unit on the OMP website. Using that (very small BTW) picture I've started
my builld trying to copy what it looks like they did. Here's what I've done
so far as cutting the fuse for the unit.

This picture shows how I mounted the pitch servo and how the Ikarus
adaptors are going to be used.

Have you seen the 1/8" dia. carbon tube motor mount method, shown in the Aug? issue of fly-rc, looks like the way to go for shockies

Interesting servo placement (offset). How much throw does the Inkarus unit take to pitch the blades? Some of the others require a servo horn that has a hole very close to the center of the servo horn, much closer than what your photo shows.

Thanks for the build pics!!!

Mike, no haven't seen it yet. Hope my issue comes in the mail soon.

rcplaneguy, I might move it down one more hole but I'm hoping to
be able to use the radio to set the travel endpoints.

The reason I placed the servo where I did was to try and keep the
plane from being nose heavy. Seems like the linkage works smoothly
so far

Steve, I'm going to use the carbon tube mount on my next Shockflyer. four 1/8" carbon tubes embeded in fuss from nose to just aft of wing, the motor mount "X" is screwed into the tubes. Suspose to really stiffen/strenghten the whole nose for a few grams of cf tube. The vari-prop set-up is detailed in the same article, if you suscribe to the mag, you should have it by now.

I do have a subscription, have had for several years and they've never
missed a delivery. I think it's a great mag and hope the mail hasn't lost
my issue . Still not too late to change mine if I can see a picture of
how it works, hint....hint.....

Ok......... That Ikarus motor looks just like the AXI 2204. I wonder if I can buy the PPS and put it on like how it comes from Ikarus

Yes and No . The front bell and propsaver are different in that
the propsaver is farther fron the bell to make room for the pitch mechanism.
You can use a 2204 with a hollow shaft but the shaft will have to extend
out past the propsaver so you can use the hub included with the PPS.
In other words the blade grips will attach to the hub instead of to the
prop saver.

Making Progress.......

Got the airframe basically done and the PPS installed . Here's some
shots to show how I strengthened the nose with flat CF and the unit at
extreme positve and negative pitch.
