Hi!
I'm new to this forum and a neophyte to electric boating, so my suggestions must be taken with a grain of salt.
I have two of these on order and am also interested in upgrading them.

Motor Upgade
I'm not quite ready to perform surgery on them so I have been trying to find a direct replacement motor. It looks like the Graupner 480BB
might fit directly with a diameter of 29.3mm. Can you tell me the actual diameter of the stock motor?

Prop Upgrade
Going to a slightly larger, better quality prop (esp if the motor is already upgraded). I'm looking at these (also at offshore electric):

Beryllium Copper Metal Props
X427 (1.06") 1.4x1.06=1.484" 1/8"
X430 (1.18") 1.4x1.18=1.652" 1/8"
X432 (1.26") 1.4x1.26=1.764" 1/8"
Downside is that these are quite expensive.

On the cheap side I just ordered (Tower Hobbies):
LXCTD0 Hobbico Propeller Nitro Hammer & ProFisherman (2) $4.49
I'm hoping they will fit.

Carbon fiber props seem like a good choice, but I have not found any to fit.

Trim Tabs
Also trim tabs might be useful at a later stage (Tower Hobbies):
LXGRW5 Hobbico Trim Tabs w/Screws Hammer EP $2.69

Battery Pack Upgrade to 8.4v
Haven't found a stock replacement yet, may have to build one.

That's about all the ideas I have about it at this time. Any suggestions from anyone would be much appreciated.

The 480BB should fulfil your performance expectations .... until the esc burns up. You'll need a 20/25 amp capable esc. for that motor especially if upping the no. of cells Graupner do a 29 mm carbon prop which is about as much as the 480 will take. The ocyura x427 would be a safer bet but it needs balancing, sharpening and polishing to give its full potential.

Thanks for the input. I was beginning to suspect as much just looking at the guage of the wires that come with that motor, and others of similar calibre - much thicker than the standard wires in the RR2.

Right now I'm looking at getting either a Multiplex Permax 400 6V Motor

or a Speed 400 6.0V Motor

That way I'm already overvolting it with the standard battery pack without having to build a new one, though I'm sure the runtime will be a bit decreased.

A speed 400 should pull about 10 amps at max power. Playing safe, any 15 amp rated esc should work. You might want to consider water cooling the motor as well.

The Reef Racer unit is listed as a combo reciever/esc. To install a new ESC, you would also have to install a separate reciever.

You just need a new receiver and an ESC. Something like these:

Futaba rx
Tower Hobbies rx
Novak rx

Trinity ESC/RX unit

Novak Spy ESC

The Futaba transmitter and reciever should work.

If you decide to buy the reciever only, make sure you match the 27mhz frequency that the Reef Racer came with. There are typically six available. So Check your Transmitter Frequency down to the last decimal point before you order.

The Reverse option of the Novak Spy ESC might be nice...

Don't forget the Reef Racer 2 is a "FM" radio on 27mhz.
