Photos of your CD winds...

Hi I've been reading a lot in this forum about CD motors and I've been practicing rewiding CD motors, but I am impressed when people talk about 22 turns with a 24 gauge wire, how in the world can you fit that many turns ! !

I'd like you guys to post some pictures of your creations. Here is my last job, 16 turns 24 gauge wire

Very neat windings you've got there. From the photo, I see you've got lots more room to fill with wire. Fill it to the rafters, as Ron van S would say.

Here's a pic of a 25mm stator. I really do need to shorten those tails, don't I?

Hi eco,

Yes, the windings are really packed in there! The stator in the photo is a 12 pole GB stator, not a 9 pole GB stator. I posted the photo just as an example. The pictured stator has been wound with 8 turns of two strands of 26 awg wire. Two strands of 26 awg is equivalent to a single strand of 23 awg—which I didn't have available, and which might have been harder to wind. You can see from the photo that I probably could have sqeezed some more wire on, too.

For a given number of winding turns, use the thickest wire you can to fill up the stator slots in order to maximize motor efficency. Neat winding (like yours) can help you fit more wire on the stator, but otherwise is of no siginificance to motor function. It does look very nice though!

One trick to fitting as much wire as possible is to wind more turns on the "outside" of the stator tooth where there's a wider stator slot due to the larger diameter. All of the open spaces in your stator slots, for instance, could have been filled with more winding turns—or the same number of turns of thicker wire.

Another winding trick is to compress each set of windings against the side of the stator tooth before you wind the adjacent tooth. I use a little flat-sided steel solder pick to force the wire against the tooth, but that's probably a little risky. Better to use a plastic or wooden tool so there's less chance of damaging the wire insulation and causing a short. Compressing the windings significantly increases the amount of wire you can fit on the stator.

Mine FWIW the story on 22T of 24ga is not going to happen. The last 2 pics show a 17T of 24ga and it takes a particular winding sequence to get the clearance on the front of the stator. #3 pic is the front and #4 is the back.

Here's 21 turns of 26g newbie wire (from the standard Gobrushless kit) - I physically couldn't get any more in but it's not as neat as the above photos (and the photos aren't nearly as good)

The second photo has been photoshopped (gimp'd actually) to try to improve the colours - in case anyone wonders about the dark circle around the stator.

What am I doing wrong?

How on earth do you get that much wire on?
Here's a photo of 12 turns of 24g (on a double stator, but I don't think that should make much difference) As you can see the last few turns are only just in place.

I get 6 full turns in the first layer on each tooth, so the first phase isn't a problem, the second phase is harder and the third is a real squeeze!

What am I doing wrong?
