Car RC radio operate same as Air RC

Other than the rules about which frequency you can use for which type of R/C, what exactly is the difference if any between the two? If I wanted, could I not use Car RC radio gear to fly an airplane? Or are they designed functionally diifferent (to prevent) so this can't happen?

Well, most people that drive rc cars get a pistol style radio, and pistol style radio's only go up to 3 channel, people do also use a stick style radio with rc cars, but seems like most people prefer the pistol style radio. And everybody uses a stick type radio for airplanes and helicopters. The receivers designed for rc cars are usually bigger than the ones designed for airplanes, because with cars, you don't have to worry that much about weight as you do with airplanes.

with the 27 mhz frequency, you can use it for both aircraft and surface vehicles legally.

you really really wouldn't want to fly an airplane, let alone a heli with a pistol style radio, but you could drive a car/truck/boat/submarine with an "aircraft style" stick radio no problem.
