Official Parkzone P-51 Owners Thread

Just thought I would start this as a place where owners can compare notes, and discuss the Parkzone P-51.

My first idea for a bit of personalization on this plane is to make the corkscrew paintjob on the spinner that I have seen on the full scale planes. My first attempt looks good at slower RPM's but at WOT it all turns into a blur.

My other idea is to paint 1/4 sections of the nose alternating black and yellow. I have seen this on full scale planes as well.

Does anyone know why they did this back in WWII? Was this just another form of "nose art"?

The answer to your nose art question is: Group identifiers. The P-51 in picture #1 is from the 357 Fighter Group. The P-51 in picture #2 is from 55 Fighter Group. The curly- cue on the FW-190 is a German ID marking.

Hope this answers your question.

So is it possible that I saw a P-51 as a kid with a spiral painted on the nose?

My LHS had ordered my replacement battery hatch cover to replace the one I had lost , the new one is a much stronger latch and it takes two fingers to compress it to remove the cover ? Anyway it seems much tighter .....we will see if it stays on .

Well that is good to hear. My replacement hatches should be coming in tomorrow.... I hope they are better as you described. I know it doesn't look real good up close, but I think if I am going to be doing any sort of aerobatics, I will have a rubber band around the fuselage from now on. If photos need to be taken, I can always take it off and keep it below 2 g's.

I am not complaining, but I think if I did the design, I would have put the hatch on top. I know it would perhaps not look quite as good, but since most everyone does 90% positive G manuvers, I am not sure of the wisdom of a bottom hatch. Of course I would not even be thinking about this had I not had the ejection problem.

I have emailed Parkzone about this and also spoken to dribbe about it. Lets hope something good comes of it. It would be a real shame to have such a good plane's reputation trashed from one single flaw.

BTW Wattman.... I like those red tips on you avatar pic. I am still trying to get that spiral down for my spinner. I may need to resort to a half and half look as shown in the pics above.

I was thinking about all the people having trouble with the battery falling out. It seems to happen with high G manuvers that slam the battery down on the tray. What about making a foam plug to go in under the battery so that it fits sung in the battery compartment? That way the battery does not have a chance to move enough to create the force to punch out the hatch?

Has anyone thought to try another brand prop on it yet? Perhaps a nice APC "E" one?

Only asking as the PZ one looks.... well it looks kinda odd to me.

Yeah I distinctly heard a snap sound and then saw the green glob come out the bottom..... I thought that it was the battery hatch breaking since I found only part of the hatch on the ground afterwards. Perhaps it was just the battery slipping loose and hitting tha hatch!

One guy here has pics of his hatch with stress points starting to form at the rear of the hatch opposite the pinch point. This would seem to indicate a stress point that could cause a failure.

Maybe it is a combination of both?

Tommy,

The prop looks really good when spinning, but I agree I think it would be cool to see some other props..... perhaps even a 4 blade one! I know the torque would be massive, and landings would be difficult......but STILL it would be so cool!!

Hand Launch Videos (Finally!)

I finally figured out how to convert the quicktime movies I had to something a bit more user friendly.

These are the first two flights I had with the plane. As you can see it doesn't rocket straight up, but then again.... real planes don't do that either! Also, it does NOT swoop down or even come close to hitting the ground. There was a slight breeze with these clips, but it was highly variable, so I can't say for sure how much headwind there was for each launch.

Hopfully this will help the craving out there for new videos.

If you want I can convert some basic aerobatics I did to show how well it flys...

p.s. Man I am REALLY sorry about the poor quality of those vids..... I don't know what else to do with the 100k size limit on .wmv's

Hey Guys, not an official owner (YET). Hand launch seemed to go quite well, no dive or anyother pucker inducing moments. Can't wait to get one of these.
