Funny pic. Makes me want to build a foamie boat for the kid and slap in a 12v marine battery and trolling motor for him. I don't think the wife would appreciate that though. Maybe I should make one for her too! (Ok sorry, had to be said, back to the regular scheduled thread).

Hi.

I've been a little busy working on a remote sensing UAV for school. Smaller, but infinitely more complex than a floaty piece of fanfold. I still want to fly Big Floyd though. Thanks for sticking around. And for the people that say it wont happen, I guess that's my motivation to go fly the thing. So thank you.

Out of the six Thunder Power packs that I bought, three of them have gone bad. One puffed about 4 months in, and the other two just puffed recently. I've treated them well, and none of them has more than 15 cycles. Any thoughts? I emailed TP about them with no response. I shouldn't say too much bad about the company since they gave me a good deal on them, but a 50% failure rate?

In other news, I'll graduate in December. I'll be home for a couple days in the end of May and I'll check the condition of Big Floyd then. Eric is shipping the gearbox back to me soon. One advantage of working on the UAV for my engineering department is that I have access to lots of fancy tools. Maybe I can get the gearbox going, but I'm really tempted to build my own big outrunner. I've learned a few things about them in the last two years. It shouldn't take much. I think 3 or 4000 watts of well-used power would make Big Floyd happy.

Anyway, that's that. I'll have an update in the end of May.

Thoughts on replacing the puffed cells in the lipos? I'd love to hear them.

Batteries?

Hi Hans,
Long time no hear!
I had meant to get downstate to see the UAV at the engineering expo, but didn't for some reason.
I had also sorta' expected to see you at the "Last Dome Fly"...had MY monster pink foamy along and everything!
As for batteries...I just got a shipment of 15C 640mAh Full Rivers in. I'll sell you a hundred of them for $700! Seriously...LiPos are supposed to keep pretty well at half-charge. I can't see why they would puff unless they were "leaking".
Regards,
Scott

Thanks for the update Hans. Glad to hear school is going well and keeping you challenged. So much more fun that way.

Good! I use the same source of motivation for many things.

Ahh.. I didn't realize that Tram = CommonSenseRC until now! I just sent some customers your way two weeks ago.

The batteries we initially tried were TP 5300 prolite 5s. We had 6 packs, two in series for each motor. I'm not sure if the cells inside the packs are 3p (1325 cells) or 4p (1760 cells).

Hacker was showing a 15Kw outrunner at Toledo. It should do the job nicely.

Was that a demo? Sounds expensive.

If he feels it'll run with a mere 4Kw, somebody already has a $110 motor for that linked above. Heck, throw a second on for good measure and it'll fly!!

I think it was $999 without the controller. It sounds like active production. They claimed a 32 inch prop at over 6000 rpm. Don't know the pitch they tested, but they were calling it stronger than a DA150.

There's lots of motors out there that put out the necessary watts. There's not as many that will be comfortable with a 60 inch prop.. I cant remember exactly what the prop dimension was but it was something around that. Even that prop looked tiny on the 50 ft plane.

I expect this one would do 60 inches as well if you reduced the cell count sufficiently.
