Post up your upgraded Slow Stick Landing Gear

It is always interesting to see others modified Slow Sticks. I have seen quite a few different ways to do it. Here is my recent upgrade:

Very nice Qrome,

Here's mine, I built the front from wood,cf, and music wire for my "occasional" not so smooth landings and for front shooting clearance. I rebuilt the back with stainless wire and cf, it is made so I can stop quickly by using the elevator to make the skid act as a brake.

I used a second SS wire gear, another mount bracket, and a few 5/32 wheel collars to greatly increase the strength of my gear. Each bracket is pinned with a small screw.

The second gear brace doubles resistance to spreading under load, and totally eliminates the tendancy to spring back at landing, primary cause of nose-overs for me. Has worked fine at loads up to 35 oz.

After the stock tail wire snapped at the mount from fatigue, I bored a hole in the oak fuse and CA'd a .04 CF skid. Nice and light, but it sure screetches over blacktop and concrete surfaces.

Karl, I like the fact that you still get some spring in the gear. That is what I was shooting for as well. I sometimes like to take video out the front and I did not want landing strut down the center. I found the cross configuration gave a clear view with a tiny bit of spring -- but it is very stiff. Makes a world of difference when taking off and landing with a load.

Nice tail wire... hope you don't poke an eye out. Does it sound like fingers on a chalkboard on concrete?

Karl the landing gear look's good. Did you build the tail feathers or are they from a different plane? I have been looking for some to replace stock.Jerry

My "upgrade" consists of a piece of music wire to prevent the gear from sprawling laterally, and a piece of 20# test fishing line to prevent the gear from sweeping backwards on impact. While not very cosmetically appealing, it is easy, cheap and quite sturdy. Flying weight with camera is ~30oz.

Funny how some problems lead different people to identical solutions. I don't even have to post a pic as I did exactly the same.

I built them to replace the stock ones, details here: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=319557

I replaced the brackets and steel hardware shown with nylon bolts into threaded holes through the stick fuse. I haven't made anymore progress on the wing.

Fishing line all the way!

I saved the weight and drag of a "spreader" and use fishing line for that, too.

I used 30 lb line, and also taped the top of the LG into its plastic holder since otherwise it used to pop out on hard landings.

Used strong wire bent down on both ends to match the angle of the wheel supports.
Mounted using sewing thread and 5 minute epoxy.
The fishing line would have been a better solution.
This seems very strong though.
