Good luck! Like the title says, this is a great plane and one of my favorites for scratch building! If you have any questions, just ask. I've built many of these and other 3DBatix planes.

I have a few simple builds under my belt, the vids on my blog are cool I was wondering about CG and the use of a 2812 motor with my 3s 1300 mHa and 9x6 prop. I have some 9mm EPP and 4 mm. was going to laminate the plane and use some carbon to brace her up. What do you think?

Might be a little heavy but it's a good design and it'll fly nicely. The power sounds right for the original plans. I would use 6mm depron, fanfold or foam board for the standard 36" wingspan version. It will need a lot less bracing at that size with those foams.

I scale mine down to a 32" ws for 9mm EPP and build them ultra light. My lastest variant of the 3DBatix Diablo (very similar to the Extra) weighs less than 7 oz fully loaded. I tried to build the standard sized plane with EPP once and it came out way too heavy for 3D from all the bracing it required.

That sounds about right. I start with it just behnd the wing spar, fly it, adjust it and then mark the battery location once I'm happy with it.

My plans don't quite match up so how long is the fuselage and stiffener.

To be honest, since I used the tiled plans from page 17 and no longer have one built in the original size, I don't have the measurements. I'd have to print the plans and assemble the tiles to figure that out.

Scaled down Extra 31"

We just completed a group build of these scaled down to 31" from the simplified plan, built from 9mm EPP like StormdriverOne. They are a great hit. We've built nine so far and I am putting together 3 more shortly. Some guys built some for their grand kids, but had to have one on their own once they flew it.

We leave out the gear but add some bracing to avoid tail twist. Instead of the motor bulkhead we use a stick mount from HK. Works great.

Motor: Turnigy 2730-1500kV
ESC, 10-12A, Exceed RC Proton/Volcano
Servo, Hxt-900, 9g (Aileron)
Servo, Hxt-500, 5g, (Rud,Elev)
2.4GHz Receiver, Orange, 6-Ch., 10gr, Spektrum compatible
Propeller, GWS 8x4.3
Sky Lipo 500mAh 7.4V 20C 34gr (ideal for 3D, indoor, and low wind conditions)
Sky Lipo 500mAh 11.1V 20C 48gr (higher top speed, lots of punch)

Total cost of materials and components including 4 batteries and receiver: $70. Weight 6.5 to 7 oz depending on battery.

Looks great, I am attempting to make the wing out of 6 mm EPP. I will put some carbon and laminate it. But I dont think I can get it stiff enough will see.

This is a Extra 330, my first attempt at building a 3D plane. I will be using a 2812 motor from HK and a 1300 mHa battery (Nano Tech). The ESC is a 25-30 Amp Plush with a 7x6 prop. The Rx is a orange Spectrum from HK. Might try a larger prop don't understand the whole prop thing yet. The CG will be at 2.35 inches back from the LE for now, will most likely set her a little tail heavy will see. She is made from 9 mm EPP on the fuselage and 6 mm EPP for the wings and horizontal stabilizer. WS is 36 inches and build weight with no hardware is 3 oz her up weight will be 11 oz.

Nice to see this thread and this plane up and going again. If you are just getting into building foamies or practicing 3D, this is a great place to start. The plane is not difficult to build and is pretty forgiving about mistakes during the construction. It's a gentle flyer on low rates and crazy fun on high rates. Built well and with enough power, it's a fine 3D plane.

Why is it that this Extra and similar designs use a single aileron servo and not dual-aileron servos?
