F-106 Delta Dart

I am not an accomplished scale designer like Steve (jetset44) so my goal was to make a very simple to cut and simple to build profile model of the F-106 interceptor.

Fortunately it turned out to be a very good flyer for intermediate and above pilots.

I have included some basic actual size cutout plans here for your personal use only - not commercial.

Here are the specs:

Wing span: 22" (equilateral triangle)
Wing area: 211 sq. in.
Weight: 9.5 to 10.5 oz.
Himax 2808-980 outrunner or a 2015-4100 in a 5.33 GWS gearbox
9 X 7.5 SF APC prop
Phoenix 10 ESC
3s lipo in the 800 to 1300 range
Thrust about 14 oz. here at 5,000 feet above sea level
Top speed 50 to 55 mph

Basically it is a three ply fuselage. Here's what the parts look like. Not included in this photo is a fourth fuselage ply for the front 12" which I added at the end to provide battery and receiver bays, and to add strength to the front.
Good idea since I did manage to nose dive it once already. No damage - it's tough!

The material is 6mm Depron.

First I glued (epoxy) the wing parts together. Then I rounded all the wing edges. Then I cut out the elevons. Make them 5 X 1.75 in. ( edit note: I have since gone to larger elevons 2 X 6 in. for better slow control and added a carbon fiber rod - see later posts)
The distance between the elevons is 1.25 to 1.5 in. depending on your motor/gearbox width.
Next I glued (epoxy) the motor mount onto the wing.
Put it so the prop will clear the elevons and tail fin by about .25 in.

Next I glued the the fuselage plies and the tail fin together.

Then I cut out places for the motor/gearbox, motor mount and servos.

Then I glued in the servos. Before you do this, make sure you hook them up with your elevon mixing and test to be sure they are positioned correctly for the proper movement.

I added 2 strips of packing tape just forward of the elevons on the underside of each wing to stiffen them up a bit. I also added a strip over the wing joining seams.

This is where I added a fourth ply - only the front 12 in. to the right side of the fuselage.

Then I rounded the fuselage and tail fin edges and cut/sanded the front to make it look a bit more like a nosecone.

Next I painted with acrylic craft paint and a foam brush.

I did some packing tape reinforcement on the front part of the fuselage before cutting out a battery bay from two of the plies, leaving two intact for strength. I also cut out a place for the receiver from the fourth ply only.

For the desired CG which is 9.25 in. from the back of the wing, and using the 830mah battery pack, the bay is situated right in front of the wing. For the 1050mah pack you will need to cut out some more toward the rear, taking out about .5 in. to .75 in. of wing.

Here's how the electrics went together on the right side.

Also, after the paint job, I added strips of packing tape on the leading edges of the wings and tail fin to make them smooth.

Now, a short aerodynamic lesson.
For stability, the model needs to have the center of gravity in front of the center of lift.

And that means for this model, since we don't have a horizontal stabilizer, we need to fly with some up elevator trim. 6mm or .25 in. of up trim seems to work with this setup.

For the numbers and letters decals, I just printed them out on an Avery clear full sheet label sheet (#8665).

Here is the file. (Edit note - I made the US Air Force bolder)

For the Star and Bar decal, I printed out on Avery Matte White Color Printing Full Sheet Label paper (#8255).

Just copy this one into a word program and size it to 4 in. for the wings and 3 in. for the fuselage.

Cover all your decals with clear packing tape to keep any water out.

Forgot to mention control throws. You will want full authority to get your nose up during landings so it should be about .75 to 1 in. Jon

Your welcome Gary.

For launching, it is best to throw it with a slight upward angle at about 75 to 80% throttle and then bring up the throttle as it gains speed. If you launch with 100% using this power setup, you will probably get a little torque roll to the left. Jon
