Hobbico P40 RC conversion

Just finished/flew the P40. It's a 20 inch span free flight from Hobbico. Used a GWS S1 drive, 6x5, 8c 220mah nimh pack GWS rcvr and servos and Castle Pixie 7P. AUW is 5.7 oz. First flight was in a pretty good breeze, had the throws really low , but it flew great. The 8c pack might be overkill, spent most of the flight at half throttle. Gonna try a 7c pack this week.

Did you stiffen the wing?

Got it at my LHS ~$17. Anyplace that carries Hobbico can get them. They've also got a Zero,Spitfire,ME109, Staggerwing Bipe
and an 18.5 inch rubber powered P51. When I get a chance I'll take some pics of the innards. Didn't stiffen the wing on this one, I decided to try it as is and keep the plane as light as possible. The wind tossed it into a vertical power on dive on its first flight and I pulled it out pretty hard. The wings are still in one piece so I guess they're OK. I'm thinking about making the Zero S280 direct, so I'll probably stiffen its wings. I've got the P51 GWS direct (3x2), I made a depron spar and skinned over the bottom with 1mm depron sheet, but the damn stuff keeps warping (anhedral). Think I'll do the Zero with 1/32 balsa sheet.

I stiffened the wing on a similar project as the wing would twist in hard turns. NASTY tip stall.

a piece of bamboo as a spar and a piece of depron covering the entire wing bottom. Got rid of the underchamber and went faster too. The bamboo keeps the wing and depron separated for the strength of a tube.

That's pretty much what I did with the P51. I used a 3/16 wide piece of 3mm depron and glued it top and bottom with Elmers. When the Elmers dries it makes the spar very rigid (I'll probably do the Zero with carbon fiber rod). The wing came out stiff enough, but I can't keep the depron from warping. Did yours warp too?

No warping.
I used polyurethane glue and placed a sand bag on top of the wing until the glue cured.

Mikerjf-

Thanks for posting the info on your Warhawk. I have one waiting on the shelf ready for conversion! So it was great timing to see what you did with yours!

For those who don't have one of these...here's what it looks like as received in the box...

(hmmm my first post with a picture... <crossing fingers for luck>)
