Help with Dragonfly please.

Bought my dragonfly off of ebay. great price.
bought / changed:
1. Main motor to upgraded hummingbird (only one my LHS had)
2. gear dirve to direct drive tail rotor.
3. like 90 blades and head stiffener.
4. ping pong training gear.
5. TP 860 mah lipo.
6. 10 tooth pinoin to 12 tooth

The problem is I still can't get the thing off of the ground. I take that back I cant get it over 2"-3" off of the ground. I love the stability of the Like90 blades but from 2/3 throttle to full there is no change. I was thinking of going back to the stock blades of which I have bought 2 pairs. Is there anything that is about halfway between the stock and the Like90 blades. Or do I need to drop another $50 for a BL controller. I have a Park 400 4200kvjust sitting arround will this work?...

This heli thing is getting extremely frustrating.

Is your heli a GWS Mini Dragonfly or the Walkera Dragonfly #4? if it is the latter you are in the wrong forum. If it is a Mini Dragonfly did it come with 150h motor or the 300h motor? My GWS Dragonfly came with the 300h motor and a 12t pinion already installed and had plenty of power to fly right out of the box.

I think you should try the stock blades again and see if it fixes it.

Sorry...Most people who buy on Ebay buy the Dragonfly #4. And i doubt you woulda been the first to ask about it here. Better to get that out of the way now instead of 5 posts later.

Did you buy it new or used? You could try the GWS 300h motor as an upgrade for the Hummingbird motor. Most people seem to do fine with the 300h motor and the Like 90 blades. IMO you might as well spend the $50 for a BL contoller if you already have the BL motor.

You will have better luck getting answers in the Micro Heli forum or the Jarhead Heli Club thread in this forum.

Like90 blades wont lift with a stock brushed motor. You need a brushless setup for the Like90's to work. Period.

That is absolutely incorrect, Brad. In fact, the 300H flies my Dragonfly almost as well as a lower end brushless setup. I'd have video to prove this but our video editor has other responsibilities to attend to at the moment.

tk, I'd try the following things:

1. Take the training gear off. You may not have enough power to get yourself in trouble to begin with and you're only shortening your flight times.

2. Put the hummingbird motor aside for now and buy a 300H. I'm shocked at how well this motor does.

3. The 860mAh battery is a bit on the small side for the larger motor. I've had great success with 2s1p Kokam 1500 packs as the offer good power and fantastic run time.

Did you ever try flying it stock and then start changing things one at a time and see how it affects things or did you just start swapping everything out right out of the box?

Is the lipo 2s?

Has it ever been able gain altitude? What made you go to the new motor and different pinion gear? Not being able to fly it with the like 90 blades or ???

I started stepping everything,
When I did go the the Like 90 blades I did switch to a 12th pinion.
By the way, last night i put the stock blades back on. started to spin it up to get the blades in proper position, then went to about 3/4 throttle..
I ended up having to get the ladder out and getting my Dragonfly off of the roof!

It deffinately is the Like90blades.

Thanks everyone for the help.

Check your battery, its used and maybe corrupted,
and dont pull the training gears.

like 90 blades in good condition? maybe you must change your main motor

Make sure the covering on the Like90's is not damaged... Any little flap from the heat-shrink covering and you'll loose performance. (ask how i know ).

As for the stock 300h motor not working with the like90s.. I ditto the 'rubbish' comment. They work great on a brushed motor...

Whats the AUW of your Heli?

Yes, the Like90's do require a higher head speed to operate effectively but that is precisely why they work so well. Finding a motor that can spin these blades fast enough will pay large dividends in the form of precise fast forward flight and much greater overall stability. I can't imagine going back to the stock blades.
