cut the rudder

to do this, you need to draw a line that you will cut along. the line is parallel to the elevator as possible. if not, just trim it out during maiden.

new elevator build

i hope the pix show enough detail with the rulers for you to copy. the material is bluecor. the hinges are made from overhead transparency sheets you get at staples or any stationary store. you cut them into 3/4" x 1/2" strips. add lead in features like a chamfer so they slip into slits cut into the foam easier. i used contact cement from left over supply from a gws pico stick i bought a long time ago.

make sure that before glue dries that you get enough pivot travel.

use stock elevator to make the twin vertical fins and to fill the stock elevator slit in foam.

wings

the wings are reinforced by a bamboo skewer. it's bbq season so you should have some laying around. trim to about 5-6 inches. make sure you don't trim off the pointy end. measure and mark center of bamboo skewer. carefully insert with a constant clockwise and counter clockwise twisting into the wing. do the same to the mating wing. this might take a few tries because it's not easy to get the wings to mate up properly. now apply epoxy on the stick as it goes into the premade holes. apply epoxy only to the top side of the wings and the joining surface. DO NOT PUT EPOXY ON THE BOTTOM SURFACE OF THE WINGS. insert one wing into the fuselage of the plane. then epoxy the other wing upper surface only and insert the wing into the fuselage to mate with the other wing half with bamboo skewer.

more on wings

when you get them right, they should mate with every surface lined up with each other.

now glue elevator and twin vertical fins

this is what it looks like when ready for test glide. weight at this point is 1.5 oz. it gained .1oz since stock form. CG is 2.25" from trailing edge. yes, i measured from trailing edge because the trailing edge is straight and not swept so the should be no confusion on my edge of reference.

and here's why you don't put epoxy on wing bottom

it's so you can cut this section clean off. with this bottom put aside, you can start to add servos, receiver and esc.

please note on post 11, how far back the elevator assembly was bonded on. the elevator hinge is about 1/2 inches away from the tip of the tail of the plane. this is so that the elevator hinge will pivot without bumping into anything.
