Hobby-Lobby Yak-55 3D Profile

Anyone build and fly one of these yet? Hobby-Lobby selling the plane for $20 and a brushless outrunner SK400XT Esskay 400XT motor for just $30. I'm in the build. Fairly straight forward to build. I'm missing a horn set in my kit that hobby-lobby is sending me. I'm curios to hear what set ups for prop and battery have been flown before I maiden. I plan to use 20 amp Eflite BL ESC, 3 cell 1500 MAh Kokam and/or 2 cell 2000 MAh Lipo. APC11X 3.8 prop HS-55 servos (3) Any thoughts would be appreciated

I picked one up, used 1x3mm carbon flats on leading and trailing edge of wing instead of rod spar, shockflyer control horns and carbon rods for linkage, (shockflyer was dead) AXI 2208/34 on 3S TP 730 genII, 1.6 oz and 10/3.8 apc slowfly prop, had to move batery forward about 1/4 inch. All in all, flyes pretty nice, not too tollerant of wind, a calm air flyer, the Esskay weighs the same as the AXI, 3 cell 1500 or 2cell 2000's are a little too heavy in my opinion, that wing is tiny.

rarner, CG is just a little aft of stock spar line, 1/16 or 3/32, I also shimed the motor forward about 1/4 inch by glueing on a 6mm thick depron disk before I glued in the stock motor mount disk, figured this would help out with CG with light Batt.

mike3976 - How much flying time do you get with the 3S TP 730 genII

15 min. or more is the norm, remember this is 90% less than half throttle, 1/4 will fly the plane, only using full for brief periods, pack charges around 560 mah. If you bore holes in the sky you'll be lucky to get 4 min.

I am flying this yak-55 too! Using pull-pull for lighter weight on elevator and rudder. Using my own lighter weight z-bend wire for aleron hook ups. Didnt use any of the Hobby Lobby connectors, they are way too heavy! Using 10x3.8 prop, 400xt motor as recommended, and thunder power 900 mah 3 cell lipos. Very impressive plane for 20 bucks, but at slow speeds, the plane will wash out of control easily and really is a bit too heavy for the small wings. Lighter motor, lighter battery, and slight increase in wingsize would perform better! Have the wings scanned at a copy center with 20% increase, make template and cut your own and try! This motor mount really is no good for foam! The motor breaks off the plane even with soft landings! If I add landing gear, weight would be even greater problem! ??????Does anyone know how to adapt the 400xt to fit a motor stick instead of a firewallmount?????

Any chance you could post a picture of your pull-pull elevator and rudder set up?

Thanks for the pics Mike3976

Mike3976 - Your plane looks great. I was going to beef up my motor mount with the triangle balsa stock too. Did you beef up the foam in the front with packing tape as well? The surface of the foam looks shiny to me in your photo.

Thanks - Rich

Heya -- i've gone through 2 of these w/ the 400xt in the past 2 weeks. I've been using the 10x3.8 and 3s TP480 + TP900 packs -- 6.5mins on 480, 12-13mins on 900. Both fly it great. Haven't had any problems with low speed handling, it's happy hovering, and knife edge -> knife edge transitions are clean. All in all a good buy for 20$ airframe and 30$ motor. Cogging is insane on the 400xt. Cool to spin such a big prop. Even with the 46g 400xt i was tailheavy w/ the tp480 (stuck out OVER the motor!)... a cd-rom motor and 480's is a great light setup delivering ~7min-8min flight times of continuous hovering + knifedge. (my friend has a setup like this with pull-pull to help with the rear weight and it's quite happy).

Hot glue eliminates the problem with the front motor mount pretty nicely.

rarner, yes, used clear packing tape on fuss nose to wing LE, also used 3/4" scotch tape along fuss bottom, and 10" strips on horizontal and vert. fuss cross centered over the fuss splice near the tail, a little weight but a lot stronger.

I'll add my impression. I bought a HL Yak and the Esskay 400XT motor about a week ago. I have to admit, the first thing that caught my eye was the great price on both the airframe and the outrunner motor. I've only been flying RC for 4 months and I'm an old guy (51). I learned on a slow stick and then went to a 3DFoamy Citabria. I have to say, this is a much more touchy airplane than the 48" wing span Citabria. I set up my dual rates with the high rate at full throw (60% exponential) and the lower rate at around 55% along with 40% exponential. I lasted about 1 minute. The airplane is not really strong, the fuselage broke in half at the back of the wing. Good news was it didn't take very long to fix it using odorless CA and water/baking soda kicker. Went back and made the following changes: moved battery forward, reduced the low rate on the ailerons and increased the low rate on the elevator . Increased exponential to 60/70%.

Flew great! This is a very nice airplane. I love the way it rolls. Even on low rate, the roll rate is pretty high. Use high rates, the roll rate is fantastic. The airplane definitely goes where you point it. You can also do really nice large loops that are very smooth. It's really a lot of fun to fly. I built it pretty heavy and it still goes vertical with 3 cell 1100 mah LIPOs.

Thanks,
Glenn
