New MINI E3D from Gary Wright - Build and Fly

By now many of you have seen the announcement at SEFF by Gary Wright of "Gary Wright Model Products" ( http://www.GWMP.net ).
Gary has brought us a brand new kit!

This new kit owes its lineage to one of the earliest 3D airplanes in the RC industry……
The venerable E3D….

I was fortunate enough to be allowed by Gary to build one of the early kits, prior to the announcement today at SEFF in Georgia.
I was ably assisted on this project by the same team that worked with me on the Funtana 1.40 Build and Fly Thread.

This thread is intended to be a “Quick Build and Fly” thread,
Though we are working with a relatively early version of the instruction manual,
it is very detailed and provides a tremendous amount of detailed construction info and
Photos. Therefore we will keep the level of detail in this thread to a hopefully helpful, but
reasonable level

The plane is very clearly rooted in the original design of the E3D…
However besides scaling the plane down, Gary has made some very nice improvements in the basic design.
Among other things:

1.) The Wing is Removable! …. Yeah!
2.) The wing is a 2 piece wing with a removable aluminum wing tube.
3.) The wing location has been changed to a “Mid Wing” configuration compared to the “low wing”
configuration of the original E3D…. (More on this later)…
4.) New, very easy to operate, Canopy latch system

The plane is rather light for its size, in the range of 19 to 21 ounces, ready to fly.
This puts the plane in a weight/wing loading range that is IDEAL for many of the inexpensive Outrunner and geared motors that are available today.
AND it also means that you can stay with some very lightweight lipo batteries, which aids in keeping the wing loading down and the aircraft performance UP!
And the performance is outstanding, as you will see later in this thread.
But for those of you fortunate enough to have watched Gary fly the Mini E3D at SEFF, you already know just how well this little plane really flys!

Wingspan: 38.5 inches
Wing Area: 380 Square Inches

Recommended Power setup: 100-200 watts.

We will be building this one with a Hacker A20-20L Outrunner, a Hacker X20 Controller.
and a Thunder Power 3S1P (2100mah) Lipo battery for power.

The kit is fairly complete. All that is needed to complete the kit is:
Covering material.
2 each, 2 inch lightweight wheels
3/32 wheel collars
4 each 4/40 bolts, washers and locknuts for the motor mount
4 each Micro Servos (Gary is recommending Futaba 3108’s or equivalent)
Micro Receiver
Velcro
And of course, your choice of motor, prop and controller.

Ok.. Lets get started with the contruction of this aircraft....

Here is the Kit as received… Bag “O” Laser Cut Balsa, a few pieces of wire and a very nice looking aluminum wing Spar tube.
BTW, the ends of the wing tube have been nicely chamfered by the mfg.

Here is a shot of the front page of the manual.. Initial perusal of the manual indicates that it has been very well thought out, with numerous photos (B & W) and lots of detailed building information.

In the manual, Gary comments that the fuselage formers are very thin, light balsa.
Take this to heart. The parts are very fragile until the doublers are added and the overall structure is assembled. At that point the structure is very solid.

The laser cutting did not always go thru the sheeting 100% and therefore it required a bit of cutting here and there with a sharp Xacto knife to free some of the parts from the balsa sheets.

Our attempt on this build was to follow the instructions as closely as possible.
Therefore after checking the kit to assure that everything was there, we proceeded with the assembly of the fuselage formers…

- - > Next step is the fuselage sides:

Fuselage sides are framed with 5 strips of 1/8 x 1/8 and ¼ x 1/8 balsa strips..

Small, lite ply doublers are added to the elevator and rudder servo mounting holes, located in the rear of the fuselage.
Note that the servo cutouts are a bit on the large size, for some servos.
Before gluing the small doublers ( hard points ) for the servo mounting screws, be sure to
“dry fit” your servos to determine the exact location for the small ply doublers.
I made the mistake of just mounting them at the edge of the cutouts and the hole was too large for my servos (Hitec HS56’s).
As a result, we had to remove the doublers on one end of each cutout and move them in slightly to make the hole small enough of our servos.

As noted, the elevator and rudder servos are mounted in the tail of the fuse, keeping pushrod runs extremely short.

Adding the landing gear block:

The block consists of a Sandwich of Balsa and lite ply on each side.
Note there is a “spare” balsa center piece for the landing gear block on the balsa sheets in the kit.
Just put the extra one aside as it is not needed in the construction of the kit.

In order to strengthen the landing gear mount, gussets of 1/8 square stock are cut to length and added to the landing gear block and fuselage sides. This will help spread the load on those “less than perfect “ landings that we have all made at one time or another.

The other side of the fuse is now glued to the formers.
It is starting to look like an E3D fuselage at this point.
