Let's build a Skeeter! NEW UPDATED PLANS!

What's a skeeter? Well, After I trashed my Kat 30 prototype last Thursday after a mid-air and then flying it through my neighbor's swingset I needed a new plane to mount my 2015 on. I could have just whipped up another Kat 30, but I am always in need of a new design.

The cool thing is, I'm posting the plans for free download. Not everything I design is up for sale. Sometimes it's just fun building and sharing.

This is a VERY simple structure with no laser cutting needed. I did use a band saw for the nose, but you can use a blade very easily. I kept it extremely simple so that you guys would build it.

Specs:

Span: 30 inches
Length: 30 inches
Projected RTF weight: 13-14 ounces
CG: 3.75-4 inches aft of the LE.

This is what I'll be using:

Motor: Himax 2015-4100
Gear: 6.6:1
Battery: 3Cell ETec 1200
Prop: APC 11x4.7 and 10x4.7
Servos: Tower Pro 9 gram ( 4 of them )

Here's the plans and bill of materials:

This is what I bought to build the plane. I had some stuff left over, but not much.

8 - 1/4x1/4 sticks
8 - 1/8x1/4 sticks
5 - 3/16x1/4 sticks
2 - 3/32x3x36 -- You will use all of these to make the ribs.
1 - 1/4x3x36 sheet -- You only need about 12 inches of this. This is what the nose is cut out of, and some reinforcement blocks.
1 - 1/16x3x36 sheet -- You only need about 15 inches of this This is only used for sheeting the wing center

3 packs of LiteSpan. You can use any lite covering. Monokote is too heavy.

2 packs of the Dubro Micro horns. Tower Part LXJGT5
1 pushrod wire. Cut and bend your own.

I did not put a lot of step-by-step procedures in the plans.

I used floppy disk hinges, which I really like for this size of a plane. Just rip open a 3.5 inch disk, and cut the hinges out of the disk material. It works great.

My RTF weight came in at 14 ounces. I put a much thicker airfoil on this plane than I have on any other little plane I've built. From what I see I like this. It makes it fly much bigger.

In 5-7mph winds it was very solid and a lot of fun. I was able to hold a hover and let the wind blow me to the other side of the field. In 7-10mph winds it was still a good sport flyer, but 3D was tough and no fun. KE is easily entered and it will hold it fine. I need to shift the CG back to get a better HAKE. With the CG at it's current position I go inverted and I just need to hold a little pressure on the stick. Not much, just thumb pressure. Flatspins are solid and tight. Harriers are good with very little wing rocking. The thicker airfoil makes it feel much bigger. I'm liking this a lot. This is a very good outdoor little plane.

I'll have it indoors Wed and hope to get some video.

The plans have a CAD file and a set of PDF's that are tiled. You can easily print out the PDF's and tape them together for the fuse and wing. The other parts all fit on a single 8.5x11 sheet, so you can just print them out and trace onto the wood.

You are free to build and fly as many as you want, but no selling them.

Not everything I design is up for sale...you sell your designs?..wow that's great..I designed some good planes and I have to pay people to try them...hell I even offered free kits shipped to thier doors and not one taker. I must be in the twilight zone or something...beautiful plane BTW. I guess some got it..and some never will, and I am of the latter, and I have been designing planes for 35 yrs so I have a fair idea of what goes where but dang...

He designs planes for an ARF manufacturer, but also sets out some free ones now and again.

Quicker-

Looks great. Thanks for the plan. I am going to build this one for sure

I dig the huge airfoil. The biggest airfoil I have flown was on my Super Hots.
One of my all time faves.

Of course he does, and it shows..no wonder my designs never make it..some got it ..and some never will...but I am glad he is kind enough to post some freebies from time to time.
