Space Ship One - White Knight Project

I want to build an electric White Knight platform to launch the Estes Space Ship One while in flight and capture the whole thing with on board video and photography. Here is my journal documenting my attempt.

Phase I
Objective: Build an electric aircraft platform for launching Space Ship One
Completed: 14 April 2005
My launch platform is a kit bash of the GWS SlowStick. Twin engine with a center rail that will carry the rocket powered Space Ship One aloft. She flew like a champ today with serious lift capability.

This is the angle that the onboard video camera will record the action.

How do you plan on setting off the rocket engine while in the air?
I would protect those wires from the blast gas/exhaust...it is hot enough to melt wire insulation easily! Good luck...cant wait to see the video of it!

Now how cool is that?

Those estes rockets accelerate very quickly, I hope you get more than a few frames worth of video from that camera angle.

Best of luck!

Dr Bill,

I will place some insulation around the wire and electronics to keep the rocket exhaust from doing damage.

The rocket engine will be ignited using a simple servo circuit completion. Flip the retracts switch on the TX and the servo will move an open wire into contact with a small plate. A few seconds later and Spaceshipone will be on her way!

Roger,

Your right, I will pan a little more right so you can see the rockets flight path. Its going to be one interesting little experiment!

Also, why didn't you make your "slowstick" with an inverted V tail?
