Question
Do you really need optical zoom on an AP camera?

Hi guys,

Just wondering about this one. Seeing as it's pretty tricky to zoom in whilst in the air (unless you have ANOTHER servo strapped to the camera!), and it will probably increase the chance of getting blurred shots (as the shutter speed would have to be longer to let more light in), is there really any benefit in buying a digital camera for AP that has an optical zoom? The optical zoom is often what makes cameras so expensive, so the money you would have spent on a camera with an optical zoom could then go on a camera with more MP but no optical zoom, ya?

Whilst we're on this topic are there any optical-zoomless cameras out there you can recommend? 3MP and up I would be looking for.

Cheers,

David

Exactly! But no company will make a digital without a zoom as it would be useless to the normal consumer.

It would only be good for AP, but we are a small market in the consumer world.

Oh yeah one more thing about the zoom lense is it is just something to knock off when landing or bump and strip its servo so it won't open and close.

Sony makes a DSC-41 which has no optical. I think it runs about $150 and has 4 MP.

Hmm can't find much info on the DSC-41 .... I have found the DSC-S40 which looks like a rather tasty 4MP camera for $200:

Have yet to find any sample photos though.

For my SLR I've always prefered fixed focal lenght lenses over zooms...they tend to be faster and have better optics. Hard to say if budget priced point and shoot digitals without zooms have better optics than the more common zoom equiped units, but I'd like to try it.

It should help out with some of the durability problems you encounter when the extended lens of your AP Nikon or Pentax gets nudged.

I just saw a new Olympus 4 mp, no zoom model, < 5 oz., in the paper for $149.00 that I might give a try. Model D-425

I forgot the P in the 41.

I did not look hard, but here is a UK site of the dsc-p41

Search this forum for p41 I think there were 2 or three people that were flying one and had real pictures.

If there's no downlink thru the lens to see exactly where the camera is pointing, zoom is as mentioned, of no value.
My Casio Exilim has no zoom.
I see many cameras with 3x, but I wouldn't buy any of them for that, it's the 1x megapixels that matter.
